trailer: everything must go

anchorman. talladega nights. step brothers. old school.  just a few of the amazing comedies that the beloved will ferrell has headlined. but his latest certainly doesn’t fall in line with these slapstick credits!

watch the trailer (above) of will’s new movie everything must go in which he plays a man who lives on his front lawn and sells all his belongings after losing his wife & job. thoughts?

it’s obvious this has a comedic element, but there’s definitely some underlying drama goin’ on. it’ll be interesting to see if he’ll be able to pull viewers away from ron burgundy and into nick halsey, his character in this new flick.

everything must go has been getting good reviews for the most part: “it is a sweet — and often very honest — look at life, and another example of how criminally underused will ferrell’s talents are” (via moviefone). but there’s definitely one thing critics universally agree about – that this will not be a big money-maker at the box office. with a budget of only $8 million, the studio at least won’t be losing money. i’ll be interested to see the numbers though! catch it in theaters may 13th.

the “best” and the “brightest”

well, this title may be a bit misleading! cuz based on the trailer, this ain’t looking like the “best” or brightest” film at all.

starring neil patrick harris and bonnie somerville, the best and the brightest boasts a seemingly comedic yet poorly executed plot:

set in the world of new york city’s elite private kindergartens, the comedy centers on a fresh-faced young couple, samantha (somerville) and jeff (harris), who have only recently moved into town. they soon realize the lengths they must go to in order to get their 5-year-old daughter into school.

watch the trailer above. it seems to be… falling short. like it could be funny, but it’s just not making you laugh. i mean, i didn’t even crack a smile let alone a laugh during those 2.5 minutes! these days, it’s almost impossible to make a movie look bad, what with the magic of movie trailers. yet, this one looks like yuck.

the best and the brightest hits theaters sometime this summer, and i’d be bettin’ it’s going to flop like no other. sorry neil patrick!

‘mars needs moms’ bombs

well this just might be a first!

disney release mars needs moms debuted in theaters this past weekend, to less-than-impressive numbers. i know what you’re asking yourself… what is mars needs moms? (see trailer above).

RIGHT?!

i’ve got a fairly healthy obsession with the movie industry, habitually checking news and box office up-and-comers. even I felt a little in the dark about this flick!

it seems to be quite the dud. after costing disney over $150 million to produce, moviegoers only shelled out $6.8 million during its opening weekend. OUCH.

disney president of worldwide distribution chuck viane says of the flop, “the right audience came, but not in the numbers we needed. i’m disappointed for the filmmakers. they spent at least two years of their lives making a terrific movie that people won’t see.”

in my opinion, it was a huge marketing slip-up. usually, you see promos for movies on TV, internet, radio and you then make the decision on whether or not you want to see it. we didn’t even get the chance to decide cuz we didn’t see those promos! perhaps we’ll see it fair better over the next few weeks?

cameron diaz is a ‘bad teacher’

your curiosity will get the best of you… go ahead and watch the trailer of bad teacher above before reading on!

so, if you can get through the NSFW language, it actually looks pretty funny! cameron diaz is back right where she belongs – in a tongue-in-cheek rom com. diaz plays a foul-mouthed junior high school teacher who tries to woo a co-worker after being dumped by her sugar daddy.

she certainly has some unconventional teaching methods! let’s just say i wouldn’t want her as my child’s teacher!

bad teacher also jason segal, justin timberlake and the office star, phyllis smith. the flick hits theaters this summer – june 24th. what do you think, will YOU be checking it out?

the fashion report: 2011 Academy Awards

the 83rd annual academy awards are over, which means one thing: the fashion police are out and in full effect!

beside being entirely underwhelmed at last night’s production (sorry james & anne!), there were definitely some fashion stand-outs. check out my picks for best and worst dressed, and more!

*  *  *

i’ll start with my faves.

first up, miss reese witherspoon in a to-die-for ensemble. this giorgio armani prive gown is so simple, yet beautifully elegant. kudos to that hair do as well! and the best actress academy-award winner herself, natalie portman, shined in this marroon rodarte dress. perfect choice for her growing baby bump too! love the off-the-shoulder detailing.

‘best song’ performer mandy moore chose this subdued monique lhuillier gown. this is how you do red carpet, folks. her look is flawless right down to the exceptional fit of the dress. black swan actress mila kunis took lavender to new heights when she donned this elie saab haute couture beauty. breathtaking details and gorgeous overall design. loved it.

rounding out my top 5 was matthew mcconaughey’s baby momma camilla alves in kaufman franco. WOW, is all i can say. i couldn’t have been more in love with this choice… the ruching and lay of the skirt was muy fantastico!

*  *  *

we saw lots of RED on this year’s red carpet… and i must say they look radiant.

oscar host anne hathaway‘s chose this valentino gown for her first dress of the evening. while i liked the look, how much more svelte would this have been without the additions to the skirt? i would’ve gone ga-ga over this if it were a column dress. but good job, anne, i do like! newcomer jennifer lawrence tore it up in this form-fitting calvin klein collection gown. let’s call a spade a spade… she’s hot.

one of my favorites of the night – sandra b in vera wang! simply ravishing! that waist is perfection. i would’ve liked to see her wear her hair down for a change, but she still looks scrumptious. new mommy penelope cruz accompanied her nominated hubby (javier bardem) in l’wren scott. wasn’t my fave of the night, but you gotta hand it to her – she looks great!

presenter jennifer hudson wowed the crowd in atelier versace… what else can be said? she is workin’ it in this dress! you don’t see too many halter straps on the red carpet, but this definitely works. get it girl!

*  *  *

and now… for the worst. yikes, did these ladies have it WRONG.

i was brought to tears laughing so hard at marisa tomei‘s charles james dress. red carpet commentators loved it… until the camera panned down to the bottom. that looks like something that belongs under the dress, not on top! close, but no cigar. for best supporting actress melissa leo, i have one question: why are you wearing a doily to the oscars? please shred this marc bouwer dress as soon as possible. thanks.

nominee michelle williams picks this less-than-flattering sleeved column gown by chanel haute couture. this girl has a rockin’ bod, but even SHE looks awful in this sheet! i would’ve liked to see her in a strapless blue or red gown. next year, next year. resident beauty scarlett johansson slipped up big time in dolce & gabbana. i’m telling you, remove the old-fashioned lace, and i would’ve loved it. the color and cut are gorge, the lace is not.

an unusual choice from cate blanchett (wearing givenchy couture), that i would’ve liked if not for the circle cut-out. the light lavender and gold embellishments are glorious togehter… even the funky sleeves are working! but why is there a target-shaped hole on your chest?! bah!

ricky gervais sticks it to ‘em!

very rarely do i write any post-award show coverage that not a fashion report, but this is just too good to pass up.

did you watch the Golden Globes? well, then, you probably already know what this is all about. host ricky gervais had some fun up on that stage! and he does not regret a single moment.

in the span of four minutes, gervais managed to make an enemy of charlie sheen, johnny depp, angelina jolie, the hollywood foreign press association, cher, the entire case and crew of the tourist and sex and the city 2, scientologists, tom cruise, john travolta, hugh hefner, hef’s fiance, and homosexuals in general. whew!

and i’m not talking subtle jabs. i’m talking did-he-really-just-say-that mouth-hanging-open kinda stuff. don’t get me wrong, it WAS funny. but quite controversial! see above for video of his opening monologue.

i personally thought it was the very reason why they hired him. to get people talking! what do YOU think? did he cross the line?

the fashion report: 2011 Golden Globes

i love award season… the suspense, the movies, the chatter, the lovely dresses and the not-so-lovely dresses. we had quite a bit of both this year, actually! we had some interesting fashion choices on the red carpet that always make for a good time. let’s start off with some TRENDS!

*     *     *

we saw quite a lot of PINK on the red carpet this year, and wow, these ladies got it right!

sandra bullock tries out her new bang look with this jenny packham gown. while it’s definitely not my favorite of the night, it wasn’t the worst either. love the detailing, though. and megan fox – what can you say – she’s a stunner in anything. especially this armani prive number. the diamond strap is to die for.

one of my favorites almost every time is ms. lea michele in oscar de la renta. what a gorgeous cut & color! this was by far my top 3 dresses of the night. lea’s glee castmate naya rivera stuck out in her form-fitting douglas hannant gown. perhaps the fact that she has an killer bod is what’s making the dress look so spectacular? rounding out the pinkies was the beautiful claire danes in calvin klein. strikingly pretty!

*     *     *

BLACK also ruled the red carpet this year… with many celebs opting for the classic color instead of bold & brights.

another one of my top 3 favorite looks was eva longoria in zac posen. the fit is genius! but the waist detailing is what makes it a “best dressed.” on my not-so-great list was glee actress jessalyn gilsig, who chose this rather plain get-up from david meister. come on, the Golden Globes are your time to shine! pick something with more attitude next time.

covert affairs actress piper perabo looked totally gorge in her oscar de la renta ensemble. piper completes her look with a sleek pony and gorgeous red lips. bravo! however i’m not so congratulatory of julianne hough‘s marchesa choice. sorry, but the egyptian look is OUT.

and rounding out the group is dexter actress julia stiles. i’m not usually a fan of her fashion sense but she looks just ravishing in romona caveza. the tight fit and ruffle detailing is so very flattering, don’t you think?

*     *     *

now comes the good part… the best dressed!

a few of my “bests” were mixed in above, but here are 6 more that are quite deserving as well. starting off with the iconic beauty, catherine zeta-jones in monique lhuillier. i think my mouth was hanging open a bit on this one. not everyone could pull off this color! simply ravishing. and another perfect choice was anne hathaway in armani prive. so different! so edgy! love the shoulder definition!

red carpet newbie jennifer lawrence stood out from the crowd in this gorgeous louis vuitton ensemble. there’s something so chic about it – the straps & ruffling are simply perfection. modern family stunner sofia vergara chose this siren of a vera wang dress. i’m pretty jazzed about the color, and especially the black accent around the waist.

another repeat winner was camilla belle at an afterparty in giorgio armani. the metallic color and fabric were right on target! and the last of the “best dressed” was the ever-lovely olivia wilde in marchesa. the sweetheart cut and flowering beading put it right up there in my top 3.

*     *     *

absolutely YUCK is the only word to describe the dresses below. sorry ladies, you may be great, but your fashion choice was NOT. the lady up first? angelina jolie! okay, most critics are saying her versace gown was a “hit.” are you kidding me? this looks like something you’d pull out of your grandmother’s closet! the fabric looks cheap and the color is less than flattering.

jennifer lopez promoted her new gig on american idol in this hideous zuhair murad ensemble. j. lo, are you really wearing a shawl to the Golden Globes? again, looks very old-fashioned. blue valentine actress michelle williams struck out in her daisy-inspired valentino gown. i actually do like the cut, but daisy prints belong on your summer picnic frocks, not on your red carpet ballgown.

halle berry: you are so insanely gorgeous. why must you always choose the worst dresses?! this nina ricci design didn’t look that bad… until i saw the sheer overlay. ugh.  and rounding out the “worst” was jennifer love hewitt in romona caveza. hate the cut, hate the bustline, hate the waistline detailing… this was a total “miss” in my book.

*     *     *

so, there you have it! the fashion report for the 2011 Golden Globes. what do YOU think? agree/disagree?
