the fashion report: 2011 MET ball

well, this has been quite the weekend!

first, we have the wedding of all weddings – prince william & princess kate tied the knot this past friday. now we’ve got this year’s MET ball hosted at the metropolitan museum of art’s annual gala. the costume institute gala benefit celebrates the opening of the “alexander mcqueen: savage beauty” exhibition, featuring the late designer’s iconic work.

this red carpet is unlike any other… this is where the best & the brightest come out to celebrate fashion. and celebrate they did! let’s start off with my best picks of the night.

when it’s right, it’s right, and these ladies did it perfectly. first up, my absolute favorite of the night, diane kruger in jason wu. this chic gown accents her old hollywood appeal, right down to the slitted skirt. absolute perfection! next up is young’un evan rachel wood in a maroon gucci premiere ensemble. we don’t see too much of this color anymore, and she’s workin’ it. love the detailing around the bust.

the fashion-forward isabel lucas chose this stunning louis vuitton number – i just can’t get over the color! while i’m not a huge fan of the headpiece, it’s still an inspired look. and then there’s ginnfer goodwin in topshop. are you kidding me? the jewelry, the makeup, the shoes! oh, the shoes! i’m loving everything about this look.

blake lively got it right in chanel this time around. her recently-dyed flowing locks fall gracefully on top of a beautiful detailed bodice. well done, karl lagerfeld! and rounding out the top 6 is model brooklyn decker in michael kors. so simple, yet absolutely out of this world.

*   *   *

a big theme at this year’s MET ball? it was all about beige, starting with benefit organizer salma hayek in alexander mcqueen. expectant mommy kate hudson seemed to have blossomed overnight! stella mccartney really knows how to dress the preggos, lookin’ good kate.

in comes victoria’s secret model lily aldridge in ralph lauren collection – yea, she’s gorgeous. not many people can pull off the draped silk. that’s impressive! and then there’s another preggo on the red carpet… jessica alba in ralph lauren collection. i would KILL for her upper body – and skin tone, for that matter!

9 times out of 10 renee zellweger is on my “worst” list. but i think she got it right in carolina herrera. featuring quite the plunging backline, renee certainly knows how to draw attention to her rockin’ bod! last up, wearing valentio, is ms. dakota fanning! very age-appropriate and dainty! love it.

*   *   *

and then there was the worst. there’s always some atrocious picks, and this year was no different. first up to the plate? the usually spot-on christina hendricks in carolina herrera. i mean, did she even look in the mirror? this does NOTHING for her figure and the colors? just plain ugly. i just have to say, what in the world, christina ricci?! we already picture you as your addams family character, why act it out in real life? yuck.

i’ll be the first to admit the olsen’s are quite the fashion-forward pair. but, why must they always wear things 40 times too big? i hate ill-fitting clothes, and mary kate‘s givenchy haute couture choice is no different. argh! modern family actress sofia vergara‘s carolina herrera gown, i’m sorry to say, looks like something i could’ve bought at jc penney on the clearance prom rack. whoops.

a total miss by alicia keys in her givenchy gown. it’s not that bad – take the jacket off and we’ll talk! and one of  these days, kristen stewart may just get it right, but this not one of those times. her proenza schouler number is repetitive, ill-fitting and just plain blah. sorry k-stew!

*   *   *

this selection is all about… interesting black gowns. creative, i know. first up is model chrissy teigen in chris march. sometimes, chrissy, daring is not always a good idea. this is one of those moments. we see more cut-out fun in leighton meester‘s dress by louis vuitton. i’m like 80/20 on this one… 80% good, 20% not good.

then there’s brunette beauty penelope cruz. choosing the always-glamorous oscar de la renta, penelope looks exquisite. although i would’ve loved it even more if it were strapless! rhianna steps out in a less-than-stellar stella mccartney gown. i’m just not feelin’ the asymmetrical shoulder cut and corresponding hemline.

here comes lucy liu in vionnet. do i even have to say anything? waist-up, i could’ve dealt with. but come on, the see through slit and ostrich-y skirt? yikes! and last on the list we have ashley olsen in christian dior haute couture. ya know, i actually really like this. a form-fitting gown with puffy cream sleeves is a perfect pairing!

the fashion report: 2011 Academy Awards

the 83rd annual academy awards are over, which means one thing: the fashion police are out and in full effect!

beside being entirely underwhelmed at last night’s production (sorry james & anne!), there were definitely some fashion stand-outs. check out my picks for best and worst dressed, and more!

*  *  *

i’ll start with my faves.

first up, miss reese witherspoon in a to-die-for ensemble. this giorgio armani prive gown is so simple, yet beautifully elegant. kudos to that hair do as well! and the best actress academy-award winner herself, natalie portman, shined in this marroon rodarte dress. perfect choice for her growing baby bump too! love the off-the-shoulder detailing.

‘best song’ performer mandy moore chose this subdued monique lhuillier gown. this is how you do red carpet, folks. her look is flawless right down to the exceptional fit of the dress. black swan actress mila kunis took lavender to new heights when she donned this elie saab haute couture beauty. breathtaking details and gorgeous overall design. loved it.

rounding out my top 5 was matthew mcconaughey’s baby momma camilla alves in kaufman franco. WOW, is all i can say. i couldn’t have been more in love with this choice… the ruching and lay of the skirt was muy fantastico!

*  *  *

we saw lots of RED on this year’s red carpet… and i must say they look radiant.

oscar host anne hathaway‘s chose this valentino gown for her first dress of the evening. while i liked the look, how much more svelte would this have been without the additions to the skirt? i would’ve gone ga-ga over this if it were a column dress. but good job, anne, i do like! newcomer jennifer lawrence tore it up in this form-fitting calvin klein collection gown. let’s call a spade a spade… she’s hot.

one of my favorites of the night – sandra b in vera wang! simply ravishing! that waist is perfection. i would’ve liked to see her wear her hair down for a change, but she still looks scrumptious. new mommy penelope cruz accompanied her nominated hubby (javier bardem) in l’wren scott. wasn’t my fave of the night, but you gotta hand it to her – she looks great!

presenter jennifer hudson wowed the crowd in atelier versace… what else can be said? she is workin’ it in this dress! you don’t see too many halter straps on the red carpet, but this definitely works. get it girl!

*  *  *

and now… for the worst. yikes, did these ladies have it WRONG.

i was brought to tears laughing so hard at marisa tomei‘s charles james dress. red carpet commentators loved it… until the camera panned down to the bottom. that looks like something that belongs under the dress, not on top! close, but no cigar. for best supporting actress melissa leo, i have one question: why are you wearing a doily to the oscars? please shred this marc bouwer dress as soon as possible. thanks.

nominee michelle williams picks this less-than-flattering sleeved column gown by chanel haute couture. this girl has a rockin’ bod, but even SHE looks awful in this sheet! i would’ve liked to see her in a strapless blue or red gown. next year, next year. resident beauty scarlett johansson slipped up big time in dolce & gabbana. i’m telling you, remove the old-fashioned lace, and i would’ve loved it. the color and cut are gorge, the lace is not.

an unusual choice from cate blanchett (wearing givenchy couture), that i would’ve liked if not for the circle cut-out. the light lavender and gold embellishments are glorious togehter… even the funky sleeves are working! but why is there a target-shaped hole on your chest?! bah!

*  *  *

well that about wraps things up! what did YOU think? agree or disagree with any of my picks?

3:05 – guiliana rancic‘s baby name suggestions for natalie portman: midnight, peach, babylon. ummmm….

3:12 – best actress nominee melissa leo (the fighter) wearing an interesting high-collared gown. would’ve been great if not for that COLLAR! who wears collars on the red carpet?

3:14 – SO EXCITED to see anne hathaway and james franco in action hosting the 83rd Oscars. they are so great together!

3:23 – hailee steinfeld of true grit in a pale pink marchesa gown. very age-appropriate. sidenote: watched true grit last night, and i have to be honest, i hated it.

3:25 – black swan‘s mila kunis in a pale lavender elie saab gown. loving the color! she reveals she auditioned for director darren aronofsky on skype!

3:32 – oh how i love russell brand… with his mom “babs!” so cute. where’s wife katy? “currently touring planet earth.”‘

3:35 – blue valentine best actress nominee michelle williams in a subdued sheer white chanel gown. not crazy about it, but it’s fitting i suppose! did she seem insanely awkward during that interview or is it just me?

3:39 – best supporting actress nominee amy adams up for her fiesty role in the fighter. love the navy! WOW! but could’ve done without the necklace on top of it.

3:40 – just spotted an Oscar host: LOVE anne hathaway in that stunning red ensemble! gorgeous gorgeous!

3:50 – best song performer mandy moore chose quite the stunner in this monique lhuillier number. pretty much perfection.

3:56 – presenter jennifer hudson is so refreshing! so fun and outgoing when most people are awkwardly stoic. love her and that dashing red gown of hers.

4:03 – oh i loved scarlett johansson‘s dress at first glance… and then i saw the crochet bits. kind of looks like a old-fashioned granny dress!

4:15 – the king’s speech best actress nominee helena bonham carter looking carefree in her black get-up. “i’ve got a bit of a complex with my bum.” love the honesty!

4:21 – presenter hilary swank in another stunner. wasn’t anything special until the camera panned down to reveal the feathery detail. i’m likin’ it!

4:29 – and the big names start pouring in! sandra bullock in red, halle berry in taupe, reese witherspoon in black & white and penelope cruz in maroon!

the fashion report: 2011 Golden Globes

i love award season… the suspense, the movies, the chatter, the lovely dresses and the not-so-lovely dresses. we had quite a bit of both this year, actually! we had some interesting fashion choices on the red carpet that always make for a good time. let’s start off with some TRENDS!

*     *     *

we saw quite a lot of PINK on the red carpet this year, and wow, these ladies got it right!

sandra bullock tries out her new bang look with this jenny packham gown. while it’s definitely not my favorite of the night, it wasn’t the worst either. love the detailing, though. and megan fox – what can you say – she’s a stunner in anything. especially this armani prive number. the diamond strap is to die for.

one of my favorites almost every time is ms. lea michele in oscar de la renta. what a gorgeous cut & color! this was by far my top 3 dresses of the night. lea’s glee castmate naya rivera stuck out in her form-fitting douglas hannant gown. perhaps the fact that she has an killer bod is what’s making the dress look so spectacular? rounding out the pinkies was the beautiful claire danes in calvin klein. strikingly pretty!

*     *     *

BLACK also ruled the red carpet this year… with many celebs opting for the classic color instead of bold & brights.

another one of my top 3 favorite looks was eva longoria in zac posen. the fit is genius! but the waist detailing is what makes it a “best dressed.” on my not-so-great list was glee actress jessalyn gilsig, who chose this rather plain get-up from david meister. come on, the Golden Globes are your time to shine! pick something with more attitude next time.

covert affairs actress piper perabo looked totally gorge in her oscar de la renta ensemble. piper completes her look with a sleek pony and gorgeous red lips. bravo! however i’m not so congratulatory of julianne hough‘s marchesa choice. sorry, but the egyptian look is OUT.

and rounding out the group is dexter actress julia stiles. i’m not usually a fan of her fashion sense but she looks just ravishing in romona caveza. the tight fit and ruffle detailing is so very flattering, don’t you think?

*     *     *

now comes the good part… the best dressed!

a few of my “bests” were mixed in above, but here are 6 more that are quite deserving as well. starting off with the iconic beauty, catherine zeta-jones in monique lhuillier. i think my mouth was hanging open a bit on this one. not everyone could pull off this color! simply ravishing. and another perfect choice was anne hathaway in armani prive. so different! so edgy! love the shoulder definition!

red carpet newbie jennifer lawrence stood out from the crowd in this gorgeous louis vuitton ensemble. there’s something so chic about it – the straps & ruffling are simply perfection. modern family stunner sofia vergara chose this siren of a vera wang dress. i’m pretty jazzed about the color, and especially the black accent around the waist.

another repeat winner was camilla belle at an afterparty in giorgio armani. the metallic color and fabric were right on target! and the last of the “best dressed” was the ever-lovely olivia wilde in marchesa. the sweetheart cut and flowering beading put it right up there in my top 3.

*     *     *

absolutely YUCK is the only word to describe the dresses below. sorry ladies, you may be great, but your fashion choice was NOT. the lady up first? angelina jolie! okay, most critics are saying her versace gown was a “hit.” are you kidding me? this looks like something you’d pull out of your grandmother’s closet! the fabric looks cheap and the color is less than flattering.

jennifer lopez promoted her new gig on american idol in this hideous zuhair murad ensemble. j. lo, are you really wearing a shawl to the Golden Globes? again, looks very old-fashioned. blue valentine actress michelle williams struck out in her daisy-inspired valentino gown. i actually do like the cut, but daisy prints belong on your summer picnic frocks, not on your red carpet ballgown.

halle berry: you are so insanely gorgeous. why must you always choose the worst dresses?! this nina ricci design didn’t look that bad… until i saw the sheer overlay. ugh.  and rounding out the “worst” was jennifer love hewitt in romona caveza. hate the cut, hate the bustline, hate the waistline detailing… this was a total “miss” in my book.

*     *     *

so, there you have it! the fashion report for the 2011 Golden Globes. what do YOU think? agree/disagree?

live on the red carpet: the 2011 Golden Globes

award season is here! let’s kick it off with the 2011 Golden Globes… one of the most fun award shows all season. read below for live coverage of the red carpet!

3:00 – is it weird how excited i am?

3:02 – oh ryan seacrest. i like you, but not nearly as much as you like yourself.

3:03 – okay, wow. olivia wilde is looking FLAWLESS. great color, an even better fit. do i already have a “best dressed?”

3:05 – guiliana rancic looking quite skeletal today. pretty, but she’d look better with some meat on those bones!

3:08 – big bang theory‘s kaley cuoco awkwardly wearing a diamond ring on her ring finger when she’s not engaged? not feeling the hair either.

3:13 – totally awkward live moment on E! with kelly osbourne – stumbling a bit on air. train wrecks are always hard to watch! not loving the dress either.

3:18 – we’re off to a bit of a slow start! let’s get some celebs on the screen, E!

3:19 – j. love hewitt & bf up with on the platform. she really seems to be striking out in the fashion department lately. not loving tonight’s choice of ramona caveza, either BUT her hair and make-up do look lovely.

3:23 – julia stiles of dexter just arrived in a beautiful black ruffle ensemble. wonder if she’ll win for best supporting actress in a tv series?

3:29 – jim parsons of the big bang theory mentions the circular table seating concept of the Globes. i absolutely love how informal it is!

3:30 – 30 rock‘s alec baldwin looking quite gentlemen-like in his sleek bowtie. he mentioned he’s running for office? hmm… shall i say “spare us?!” stick with what ya know!

3:32 – ryan seacrest reveals that his “real name” is ryan seabrest

3:34 – this just in: hawaii 5-0‘s scott caan snores!

3:36 – donna karan-clad elisabeth moss chose a perfect color for her skintone – jeweled green.

3:37 – glee‘s diana agron looks radiant in j. mendel… but i absolutely HATE when people wear nude colors on the red carpet.

3:38  – WHOA, sorry ryan seacrest but your girl is looking not-so-great. julianna hough in a egyptian-inspired black & gold ensemble. bad choice.

3:4o – Golden Globe host ricky gervais on what he’s most looking forward to: “when it’s over, and i’m backstage having a beer.” HA!

3:43 – sarah hyland from modern family may be young, but her fashion choice is right on target!

3:44 - covert affair‘s piper perabo in oscar de la renta looks exceptional. dress is gorge, but hair and make-up is BREATHTAKING. the red lipstick keeps the black dress from being too boring.

3:46 – i love me some julie bowen! what a beautiful cut, but again i’m not a fan of the color. i wish this was red, orange or pink!

3:50 – never one to shy away from crazy fashion choices, helena bonham carter’s got a bee’s nest on her head and two different colored shoes on her feet.

3:54 – eva longoria steps out in BLACK zac posen. that seems to be the trend! gorgeous dress, though.

3:56 – pregnant nominee natalie portman looks stunning! love the pink & red, and especially that cute baby bump!

3:59 – breaking news… jimmy fallon & jason segal are “dating” as of this morning. got in an afternoon fight, but now everything’s better ;)

4:02 – i spy with my little eye january jones in brilliant red & emma stone in coral. LOVE IT.

4:09 – precious couple nicole kidman & keith urban up on the platform. sorry, nicole, but this dress is a huge MISS. keith on her rabbit hole role: “it’s important for nic to tell certain stories.” so cute.

4:14 – think i just saw my best dressed of the night: catherine zeta-jones in a stunning jewel-toned gown. wow! and hubby michael douglas reveals his tumor is gone! PRAISE GOD!

4:20 – modern family‘s sofia vergara gets it RIGHT in that beautiful red, hour-glass ensemble by vera wang!

4:26 – uh oh brad & angelina are here! angie in a versace green sparkle gown. pretty, but looks pretty old-fashioned. i think it’s funny that they always bypass E!.

4:27 – mila kunis in green too! WOW, love that color.

4:33 – another best dressed… temple grandin‘s claire danes! so pretty in pink and loving her jewelry.

4:36 – lea michele is always one of my faves, and tonight was no different. check her out!

4:40 – halle berry. oh my gosh. you are one of the most beautiful women in the world! why did you wear such an ugly dress?!?!

4:42 – ANNE HATHAWAY looking lovely lovely lovely in armani. very different, but i just love it.

4:43 – megan fox and her honey, both in armani. what an attractive couple! i actually like megan’s choice. pretty color!

4:45 – HATE jennifer lopez‘s dress. don’t even want to talk about it.

4:47 – another “hate”… for christina aguilera‘s hairstyle.

4:52 – the fighter‘s mark wahlberg so very much deserves awards for his movie. such a passion project!

5:00 – let the show begin! follow along here for coverage.

the fashion report: 2010 Emmy Awards

is it just me, or were the emmys really great this year? i was genuinely entertained, which is more than i can say for year’s past. from the opening number to genre montages… the show had me laughing the whole way through!

but let’s talk fashion.

*  *  *

my picks for best dressed included a wide range of styles, beginning with a navy j. mendel gown from modern family star julie bowen. the cut, color and detailing were stunning – although, i wasn’t such a fan of her messy half-updo. the office‘s jenna fischer wowed in this brilliant red versace number. honestly it was the color that drew me to this one… any other color and this would’ve been a “worst” instead of “best.”

dianna agron of glee fame took a chance with this tiered lacey carolina herrera gown, and i think it paid off. critics have been 50/50, but i loved it. very feminine and pretty. seriously, could claire danes have a better body? she looks stunning in her metallic armani prive ensemble. the temple grandin star even took home an emmy for best actress! as keri russell took the red carpet, i was floored with her jean louis scherrer dress. so simple! so chic! love everything about it.

but my hands-down best dressed was glee star lea michelle, in this oscar de la renta gown. i mean, absolutely perfect!

we saw a lot of white this year from the ladies of TV. dexter’s julie benz and law & order‘s mariska hargitay both went for the angelic white with their choices (pamella roland and vera wang, respectively). i must say i was completely disappointed with kim kardashian’s marchesa gown. she’s got the best body and coloring, i was hoping for some vibrant red or orange.

brooke burke, perfect bod as usual, chose her mark zunino dress no doubt for the sexy cutout and flattering sweetheart top. the white worked for her, but definitely not for csi: miami star eva la rue. everything from the hair to the cheap-looking gown was a complete no-no for me.

damages actress rose byrne took liberties with her white gucci dress. i love the gold features – a nice added touch.

next up, the WORST. and let me tell you, there were some bad mistakes in this line-up. the usual stunner heidi klum struck out big time in her strapless short marchesa choice. terrible, terrible decision. but nothing was worse than true blood‘s anna paquin in this horrific alexander mcqueen gown. the embellishments, the bodice texture, the hemline… a complete tranwreck.

and here’s a glee star who got it wrong! naya rivera looks like a cake topper in this 80′s-inspired get-up. spare us the fashion flashback! the beyond gorgeous sofia vergara sadly struck out in this horribly ugly carolina herrera gown. not only was the color just plain bad, but the cheesy sparkles simply sealed her fate.

what even needs to be said about mindy kaling‘s dress? the office star got it wrong. as did TV veteran lauren graham. who picked that out for her? she’s got too much of a rockin’ figure to be holed up in this sub-par ensemble. oh well, maybe next year girls!

live on the red carpet: the 2010 Emmy Awards

3:00 – it’s staaaaaarting!!

3:01 – glee‘s jane lynch jumps on the stage with ryan seacrest. in purple! i’m likin’ the choice.

3:04 – ryan and guiliana‘s small talk is always so awkward on camera.

3:04 – i ran into guiliana at the neil george salon in beverly hills a year ago. she is TINY. even tinier in person.

3:05 – host jimmy fallon and his wife (aww!). didn’t know he was married? quote from jim on hosting, “i wanna play with everybody, i want everybody involved.”

3:11 – ross matthews… the intern from the tonight show with jay leno… is apparently a fashion correspondent??

3:14 – E!’s glamcam 360 is actually quite helpful when evaluating fashion choices! nice!

3:15 – both dancing with the stars carrie ann inaba and kelly osbourne both in shimmering black. LOVING kelly’s get-up.

3:16 – jersey shore cast live via satellite. GAG ME. back to the real stars, please!

3:18 – ty burrell from modern family. seriously one of my FAVORITE character actors of all time. love him love him.

3:20 – just read a spoiler about the emmy’s opening. host j. fallon, randy jackson, tina fey, john hamm and others are rocking out in a choreographed musical number. fun!

3:25 – mayor of LA antonio villaraigosa says emmy’s have an economic impact of $450 millions dollars. “there’s more jobs behind the camera than in front.”

3:33 – kathy griffin and her momma giving ryan crap for winning the emmy over kathy’s show.

3:34 – AWKWARD. glee’s mark salling trying to make light and change the subject when asked about incident with co-star.

3:36 – kim kardashian wearing marchesa. good choice of style, but not loving the hair. wear it down next time, kim!

3:37 – glee‘s lea michelle looking absolutely stunning in oscar de la renta. okay, not a fan of glee, but she looks perfect!

3:39 – claire danes nominated for HBO’s temple grandin. WOW, that armani prive dress. just gorgeous style and coloring.

3:41 – OOOO fun. american idol‘s nigel lythgoe says all judges must be announced within the next 3 weeks.

3:46 – modern family‘s sofia vergara… absolutely love her! but not feeling the dress as much. good news: her bf is recovering well from his car accident.

3:48 – mad men‘s john hamm talking about growing up in st. louis, MO! whoo hoo give it up for my hometown!

3:51 – exec producer ricky gervais says he is definitely NOT replacing steve carrell. boo! but news is that portia de rossi might. love that idea!

3:59 – mad men january jones in a brilliant blue versace gown. what a HIT. interesting bodice and hem.

4:02 – a total BOOB shot as mad men‘s christina hendricks and ryan look at her figurine barbie doll. a beautiful lilac zac posen gown…

4:05 – commercial break! time to go get a water and do a load of laundry.

4:09 – newlyweds stephen moyer and anna paquin from true blood talkin’ the racy rolling stone mag cover.

4:11 – heidi klum in a SHORT black marchesa dress. hmm, haven’t seen any short dresses for quite some time. nice to switch it up!

4:13 – hysterical! noticing both mindy kaling and heidi are wearing similar styles, she says “see, me and heidi usually touch base before every award show, just to make sure we’re wearing the same thing.”

4:16 – random flashes of brooke burke and true blood‘s nina dobrev… LOVE love love their choices.

4:18 - how i met your mother’s neil patrick harris and ryan chatting about babies…”see, ryan if you wait until you’re NOT busy, you’ll never have kids!” ryan: “okay, i’ll start trying tonight.]

4:23 – doing crunches during commercial breaks. mutli-tasking at its finest!

4:25 – amy poehler and will arnett celebrating their 7th wedding anniversary and the birth of their 2nd child (just 3 weeks ago)! amy’s sportin’ about $500,000 worth of jewels…!

4:31 – steve carell and his lovely wife. i don’t want to hear any more news on him leaving the office. i still refuse to believe it.

4:41 – ed o’neil on being the only male cast member of modern family that was NOT nominated. his castmates call him the “glue that holds everyone together!”

4:44 – the office‘s john krasinski looks FABulous in his bow-tie suit attire.

4:47 – guiliana with glee‘s diana agron makes a good point. she’s not well-known enough to snub out on the questions! that’s reserved for uber-celebs like julia roberts & angelina jolie.

4:54 – paula abdul on the red carpet! can she please come back to american idol? the show needs her!

4:57 – a quick glimpse of keri russell in this amazing pink halter gown. a surprising yet refreshing choice!

4:59 – and we’re on to the BIG SHOW!
