the fashion report: 2010 MET ball

the MET ball (noun): a gala held at the metropolitan museum of art in which celebs far & wide gather for one purpose – to pay homage to fashion. look FIERCE, or leave.

i gots to say, i was more impressed than i usually am with the MET red carpet. there were definitely some shining moments. i couldn’t narrow down my picks for best – i chose 7! not much to say about the four above. heavenly, i believe would be sufficient enough to describe camilla belle (in jason wu), mila kunis (in vera wang), melania trump (in christian siriano), and anne hathaway (in valentino – her fave). WOW.

below, jennifer lopez worked it ouuuut in zuhair murad. love the silhouette and the design scheme – perfect for her coloring. jessica alba channels old school hollywood in this champagne colored sophie theallet gown. and i’m loving model bar rafeali’s choice of the hem, showing off her gorgeous gams in this rag & bone ensemble.

she’s been off the map recently, but claire danes came in strong at the MET ball, donning a brilliant form-fitting burberry gown. and of course, i loved rachel weisz’s custom-made oscar de la renta gown. who doesn’t appreciate a splash of color?

*   *   *

the MET ball saw a lot of white this year… some did it good, some, not so good. diane kruger chose this calvin klein gown – a great look for her. take a gander at those curves! really not jealous at all! jessica biel rocked the greek goddess look in her ralph lauren collection dress… loved the gown, hate the hair. two-toned brown has never been my thing.

kirsten dunst – what’s with the hemline? i can’t stand the it’s-a-long-dress-but-not-quite-touching-the-floor kinda thing. her rodarte for gap dress had me less than impressed. taylor swift was a different story in her ralph lauren collection ensemble – very age-appropriate and feminine. she might try switching the hairstyle every once in awhile… it’s pretty much the same on every red carpet.

and one of my faves for the night, emma watson in burberry. the stunner can do no wrong in my eyes… gorgeous!

*   *   *

aaaaand for the worst. and man, where there some unflattering choices! dear, sweet kristen stewart. in other words, what the heck is wrong with you? this chanel dress is HEINOUS in every way possible. and what’s with the hair/make-up? time to fire the stylist. the lovely gisele bundchen seems a little more like catwoman than a sophisticated MET attendee. not feeling the alexander wang gown at all.

sienna miller almost had it right in her emilio pucci gown – how much more gorgeous would it be as a full-length? and tina fey, oh tina fey. just because you’re known for being “funny” doesn’t mean you have to dress like crap. who wears a jumpsuit to the MET ball… honestly.

no words for katy perry. her cute circuit dress has actual LED lights included. doesn’t that just scream classy?

*   *   *

so, what do YOU think? agree/disagree with my picks?

the fashion report: 2010 Academy Awards

ahhh, the red carpet. this year, i had so much to say that i even live-blogged it. i gotta a lot of opinions… apparently.

the ladies above had me over the moon in awe. kate beckinsale – i dunno, maybe it’s just her rockin’ bod – but she looked incredible in this kaufman franco gown. and playing up her curves big time was j.lo in this little number by giorgio armani prive.

another favorite was glee star lea michele in oscar de la renta. she got it right at the globes too! however, maybe it’s time to go for some color? she’s a fan of black.

penelope cruz chose the gorgeous red ensemble by donna karan. as far as i’m concerned, she can do no wrong. and wrapping out my fave top 5 is rachel mcadams… holy beautiful! she rocked this watercolor elie saab gown. pure perfection.

***

and now for the worst. i almost gagged looking at a few of these. sarah jessica parker leads the pack with this beyond fugly canary-yellow dress by chanel. what’s with the darn neck scarf? and i’m hating the shapelessness. nicole richie was arm candy to fiance joel madden, who DJ’ed the event. unforch, she got it oh-so-wrong in this elvira-esque reen acra dress. stripes at the oscars? i don’t think so.

and charlize. ohhhh charlize what the HECK were you thinking?? the lavender boob-cupping is not flattering. this is one time dior couture was not a good look for her. definitely my “worst dressed” for the evening! now, diane kruger wasn’t quite so bad. i actually would’ve liked her chanel choice had it not been interrupted mid-way by those ruffles. close, but no cigar.

zoe saldana’s gown had the makings of a gorgeous dress… great fit, inventive, sparkly and purple. until the camera panned down to the bottom. what the balls? (literally) this givenchy gown was stirrin’ up quite the controversy. she looks like a paper mache project! and my favorite, as one reporter put it, “how do you say UGLY in na’vi?”

***

and for good measure, i threw in two gentlemen that got it right. first we have my celeb crush ryan reynolds in a classic tom ford tux. you can never go wrong with a good-fitting suit! i have to hand it to robert downey jr. for being inventive here. while i don’t love the blue sunglasses, i am a hug fan of the blue bow tie. his lanvin tuxedo even coordinated well with his wife’s! now, that’s cute.

alright, so what are you thinkin’? agree or disagree on my best/worsts?

7:17 – steve and alec in a film short… “i can’t believe they didn’t get us our own rooms!” as they share a bed the night before their hosting duties…

6:30 – zoe saldana, again, what the heck are you wearing?!

6:18 – “hey ferris, it is your day off?” paying tribute to legendary director john hughes. so cool, got all the old gang together to celebrate him!

6:15 – best original screenplay: the hurt locker. well-deserved.

6:04 – miley slips up while presenting… “it’s our first time here, we’re a little nervous!” the winner for best song: “the weary kind” from crazy heart.

5:57 – cameron diaz & steve carrel with a HIIIIlarious dialogue about being so “dazzling” that it’s hard to look at them. going through the nominees for best animated feature film… and the award goes to: up!

5:46 – best supporting actor award goes to: christoph waltz for inglorious basterds. YES!

5:41 – “christoph waltz [of inglorious basterds] plays a nazi obsessed with finding jews. well, christoph (motions to the audience)” HAHA!

5:40 - penelope cruz steals the show in that donna karan couture gown of hers!

5:39 – the boys pull out their 3-D glasses to take a peekeroo at avatar director james cameron.

5:37 – “oh look, it’s that damn helen mirren.” “steve, it’s dame helen mirren.”

5:35 – paying honor to the most nominated actress of all time… meryl streep!! or, as steve martin put it, she’s got the “most losses.”

5:34 – i love steve martin & alec baldwin. and i loved it’s complicated. so funny!

5:32 – alright, neil patrick harris is now in a sparkly tux, singing his little heart out. wow, this is a big theatrical number! complete with showgirls and kick lines…

5:31 – the curtains open, and all the best actor & actress nominees are on stage! that’s new.

5:30 – okay, thanks ABC for the last of the red carpet coverage. let’s get on with the show!!

5:26 – meryl looks incredible! favorite part of the night, she says? “getting inside, sitting down & slippin’ off the jimmy choos!”

5:23 – kate winslet always is “best dressed” in my book. gorgeous ensemble, and loving the canary yellow jewelry.

5:22 – miley cyrus, pull your darn shoulders back. bad posture is one of my biggest pet peeves!

5:19 – sidenote, ABC has some great new shows out this year… modern family, the middle, cougartown. love them all!

5:15 – watching the ceremony in high-definition is a whole new ballgame. no amount of make-up can’t help you hide from the cameras, ladies!

5:10 – kathy ireland is the most awkward interviewer i’ve ever seen. what were you thinking, ABC?

5:05 – i hate when hosts ask the celebs if they’re “happy to be there?” yeah, obviously!

5:02 – the five best supporting actress nominees are up on the platform. what a gorgeous array of dresses!

5:01 – sherri shepard & kathy ireland open the oscars. wait, why?

5:00 – did ya see my best & worst of the red carpet?

live on the red carpet: the 2010 Academy Awards

3:00 – flip on the E! channel, as ryan seacrest opens up the evening. let the red carpet begin! (check out my coverage of the ceremony itself here!)

3:03 – it’s raining, this should be interesting.

3:04 – avatar star sam worthington and girlfriend are the first on the red carpet. nice accent! he says it took 4.5 years to shoot and edit avatar. wow!

3:07 – zac efron, presenter, walks up… says he say avatar 4 times! and the best part was sam’s acting. sam replies, “well that was the best $100 bucks i’ve ever shelled out. aww, cute celebs.

3:10 – up in the air‘s anna kendrick in a beautiful blush-toned gown is up next… i still can’t take her seriously with that horrible twilight acting.

3:12 – mo’nique pops by with her husband (remember their “open marriage” policy? weird)

3:19 – robin thicke & wife paula patton walk by – she’s about 7 months prego! brave girl for walking the red carpet.

3:25 – zoe saldana, oh man. i LOVED your givenchi dress… until i saw the bottom. why are poofy balls attached to your dress?? she still looks gorge though.

3:27 – joel madden and nicole richie… joel is DJing the oscars? interesting! nicole looks way better as a blonde…

3:28 – ryan reynolds. *swoon!*

3:30 – vera farmiga’s dress is GORGEOUS! dyyyying. beautiful color, beautiful cut. by far the best dressed so far (dress is marchesa).

3:35 – i don’t know why, but i just cannot STAND tina fey or her fashion choices.

3:38 – james cameron’s wife looks like a skeleton! gray hair and all. james says they had a cover title for the project so it would be kept a secret… “project 880″.

3:40 – nominee (for crazy heart) maggie gyllenhaal and hubby… she’s cute, but i’m just not a fan of the shapelessness of her gown. straight down, nothing much goin’ on. ha! husband says he got drunk dials from maggie while rehearsing!

3:42 – i love elizabeth banks. she presented the “nerd oscars” aka the sci-tech oscars earlier this week.

3:44 – “it’s not about money, cars, things… it’s all about your connection with other people” – tom ford, in a dazzling self-designed suit.

3:45 – E! poll comes in with 72% of people saying mo’nique will bring home the award for best supporting actress (precious).

3:50 – lenny kravitz & daughter zoe stop by… wow, his daughter looks just like him.

3:58 – seacrest now with diane kruger, here for my favorite film of the year, inglorious basterds. says she had to learn 30 pages of dialogue for her audition! one word to describe quentin tarantino on set? “mad,” she says!

3:59 – sandra bullock, oh sandra. nominated for the blind side. love her gown so incredibly much! the gold see-through, lacey-ish dress looks stunning on her, especially with the red lipstick. “whenever i walk up those stairs to present or whatever, i just don’t want these heels to drag this body down!”

4:02 – tyler perry, talented but insanely arrogant. why does he have to attach his name to the title of every movie he does? (tyler perry’s why did i get married, i.e.)

4:04 – amanda seyfried with seacrest talking about her next role, red riding hood. great make-up, but the armani prive dress is lacking color.

4:05 – big mike from the blind side! ahh! he’s so precious. his job before this? security guard.

4:06 – “people don’t realize how good he really is, because he’s actually a 5’8 white guy” – the blind side co-star tim mcgraw

4:09 – E! poll tells us that 69% of people are vying for sandra to take home the oscar for best actress. like, duuuuh!

4:13 – iiiiiiiit’s miley! that voice, so manly. stand up straight, lady! why the heck does miley cyrus’ mom have angel wing tattoos on her back? awkward.

4:15 – sarah jessica parker in a chanel couture gown. like the color, hate the scarf-type wrap she’s got. hubby matthew broderick is gettin’ old! oh ferris, where are ya?

4:18 – what the FRICK is charlize theoron wearing?? i’m just not a fan of drawing major attention the the “ladies.” but i do love the purple color. (obvi)

4:24 – george clooney shows up with his latest squeeze… looks like he had a hat on before, there’s a crease in the back of his hair. weird!

4:29 – clooney & queen latifah talkin’ about keeping acceptance speeches short. “i even voted for jeff (bridges, nominated for crazy heart). i said, ‘jeff, keep your speech short’” – georgie

4:31 – i love my meryl! nominated for best actress, julie & julia) she has a style of her own, that’s for sure. she confronts ryan about his award pick (he choose sandra!)

4:33 – j.lo, baybee! in an “irridescent pink” gown. definitely a good choice, loving it!

4:39 – keanu reeves is here! my bf’s bro-in-law’s secret twin.

4:40 – best actress nominee gabby sidibe from precious is so cute, at the oscars for the first time ever. “if fashion was porn, this dress would be the money shot!”

4:43 – i’m loving robert downey jr.’s fashion tonight – the blue bow-tie is different, and a very welcomed look.

4:52 – rachel mcadams, without a doubt a “best dressed” for me! love it!

4:58 – show’s about to begin! cameron diaz on camera, presenting at the ceremony. she looks quite cleaned up! love the gown, sparkly gold flecks everywhere.

5:00 – it’s ceremony time! check out my coverage of the ceremony here!

wave bye-bye to the oscar!

i bet this guy is just kicking himself right about now… co-producer of the academy-award nominated film the hurt locker took a fairly unconventional approach to garnering support for his film. nicolas chartier sent out a mass email to beg for votes!

umm, can we say against the rules?! take a look at chartier’s desperate email below…

i hope all is well with you. i just wanted to write you and say i hope you liked hurt locker and if you did and want us to win, please tell (name deleted) and your friends who vote for the Oscars, tell actors, directors, crew members, art directors, special effects people, if everyone tells one or two of their friends, we will win and not a $500M film, we need independent movies to win like the movies you and i do, so if you believe the hurt locker is the best movie of 2010, help us! i’m sure you know plenty of people you’ve worked with who are academy members whether a publicist, a writer, a sound engineer, please take 5 minutes and contact them. please call one or two persons, everything will help!

what the heck was he thinking? and did you catch that dig at favored best picture winner avatar? even though he quickly realized his HUGE mistake and wrote an apology letter, the damage had already been done.

deemed an “ethical lapse” by the academy executive commitee, they have ruled to bar the hurt locker producer from the awards ceremony. it’s truly sad, because the movie was actually pretty darn good. did he ruin the hurt locker‘s chances for picking up the best picture award? i guess we’ll see!

it’s oscar time

ahhh my favorite time of the year. the academy awards! tune in to catch the coverage on sunday, march 7th at 5pm PST on ABC.

co-hosted by two of hollywood’s funniest – steve martin and alec baldwin – it’ll be a pretty entertaining show. and ladies, there’ll be plenty of eye candy. award presenters include such gorgeous men as ryan reynolds, keanu reeves, bradley cooper, chris pine & gerard butler.

an amazing line-up of movies are in the running for the night’s top honors… should be exciting! check out all the nominations below, with my picks in pink!

to sum it up

the 3-hour presentation of the 67th annual golden globes came & went this past sunday night. and it was a pretty good night!

host ricky gervais was as awkward and wonderful as ever: “i recently just had a penis reduction. now i just have the one” (instead of two??) oh, ricky. to see the winners… well, at least the ones YOU care about… scroll down to the bottom for the full list!

and now, for some fashion.

the red carpet was all about the purple! which, of course, i thoroughly enjoyed. sandra bullock (in bottega venetta), leona lewis (in roberto cavalli), rose byrne (in lanvin), fergie (in elie saab) & jane krakowski (in j. mendel) all represented the color of royalty with beauty & grace.

*                *               *

on to the best & worst! jennifer aniston threw on this valentino gown, looking effortless and as gorgeous as ever. but it was truly the young hollywood crowd that took over my best picks. dianna agron, star of the tv show “glee” looked stunning in reem acra. perfect, perfect, perfect.

“avatar” star zoe saldana picked her louis vuitton dress no doubt for the color – the plum looks dazzling on her skin tone! actress camilla belle showed us exactly how to do the short dress in her giorgio armani piece… rarely do i like the short length for awards’ nights, but this is ravishing.

wrapping up my top 5 is another “glee” cast member – lea michele. her oscar de la renta gown was my absolute favorite of the evening. she’s got it down!

*                *                *

now brace yourself, it’s about to get bad. these ladies were pure disappointment. mariah carey brought some golden globes of her own, the poor gal. put those darn things away! and heidi klum – who we rarely see on the “worst dressed” list, is getting panned for her bizarre barbie-esque number.

90210 starlet annalynne mccord’s dress? she swung and missed with this grecian gown… it looks as if there’s a bit too much “cupping” going on up there. not flattering. funny lady tina fey chose a zac posen ensemble… with the ever-so-ugly calf-length flare.

christina aguilera walked the red carpet as a presenter with her “burlesque” co-star, cher. her peach versace gown had promise – until of course the metallic bodice took over. so close, christina!

*                 *                *

television’s big night

it’s the celebration of television! the emmy awards, hosted by neil patrick harris, featured a plethora of your favorite shows & stars – all there to honor the industry’s best. the telecast garnered a viewership of 13.3 million, an impressive 11% increase from last year’s show.

we’re all used to ’30 rock’ being big winners, which of course this year they were as well (best comedy, best lead actor), but i was happy to see some other well-deserved victories. the lovely toni collette won the emmy for best actress in a comedy series (‘united states of tara’). and for his role as ben in ‘lost’, michael emerson won best supporting actor. i also thought it was very fitting for justin timberlake to win best guest host for his hilarious stints on ‘saturday night live.’ click here for a full list of this year’s honorees.

but let’s be honest – you just wanna know who looked good and who failed miserably! best dressed, shall we? i have to give it up to ‘eastwick’ star lindsay price. my oh my she looked stunning in a dress by j. mendel. and emmy award-winning actress toni collette found this drop-dead gorgeous monique l’huillier gown. just plain WOW. who would’ve thought that toni would show up in – of all things – a pink, frilly dress!

as for the worst? well, see for yourself. blake lively, star of ‘gossip girl,’ was on track with a beautiful versace gown… that is until she sliced it down to her navel. it’s just a bit much, yes? and the long, braided ponytail is a little too ‘xena warrior princess’ for my taste. then there’s poor sarah silverman. definitely not a flattering look on her! this is all sorts of wrong. especially the weird hip-bouffant action going on.

the trend of the night? white gowns. we’ve got january jones (‘mad men’) in atelier versace, olivia wilde (‘house’) in marchesa, leighton meester (‘gossip girl’) in bottega veneta & kim kardashian in ina soltani. january & olivia, i’m loving it. as for the other two ladies, i’m not as enthused. kim must’ve known she would get some ‘saturday night fever’ cracks in that outfit!

boycott nickelodeon?

rihanna_chris_brown

chris brown. rihanna. rihanna. chris brown. that’s all we’ve been hearing about lately. brown recently appeared in court to respond to charges of severe violence against girlfriend rihanna. while we wait until april to hear outcome, we don’t have to wait for more drama.

apparently rihanna & chris are back together, even after horrific pictures of rihanna’s wounds have surfaced. but back in the music world, the media has learned that chris brown has been nominated for two nickeloedeon kids choice awards – favorite male singer & favorite song. not setting a very good example there, huh? the general uproar is that nickelodeon should remove chris completely from the nominated categories. but they’re standing strong & as a result, many plan to boycott the award show.
