the fashion report: 2011 Academy Awards

the 83rd annual academy awards are over, which means one thing: the fashion police are out and in full effect!

beside being entirely underwhelmed at last night’s production (sorry james & anne!), there were definitely some fashion stand-outs. check out my picks for best and worst dressed, and more!

*  *  *

i’ll start with my faves.

first up, miss reese witherspoon in a to-die-for ensemble. this giorgio armani prive gown is so simple, yet beautifully elegant. kudos to that hair do as well! and the best actress academy-award winner herself, natalie portman, shined in this marroon rodarte dress. perfect choice for her growing baby bump too! love the off-the-shoulder detailing.

‘best song’ performer mandy moore chose this subdued monique lhuillier gown. this is how you do red carpet, folks. her look is flawless right down to the exceptional fit of the dress. black swan actress mila kunis took lavender to new heights when she donned this elie saab haute couture beauty. breathtaking details and gorgeous overall design. loved it.

rounding out my top 5 was matthew mcconaughey’s baby momma camilla alves in kaufman franco. WOW, is all i can say. i couldn’t have been more in love with this choice… the ruching and lay of the skirt was muy fantastico!

*  *  *

we saw lots of RED on this year’s red carpet… and i must say they look radiant.

oscar host anne hathaway‘s chose this valentino gown for her first dress of the evening. while i liked the look, how much more svelte would this have been without the additions to the skirt? i would’ve gone ga-ga over this if it were a column dress. but good job, anne, i do like! newcomer jennifer lawrence tore it up in this form-fitting calvin klein collection gown. let’s call a spade a spade… she’s hot.

one of my favorites of the night – sandra b in vera wang! simply ravishing! that waist is perfection. i would’ve liked to see her wear her hair down for a change, but she still looks scrumptious. new mommy penelope cruz accompanied her nominated hubby (javier bardem) in l’wren scott. wasn’t my fave of the night, but you gotta hand it to her – she looks great!

presenter jennifer hudson wowed the crowd in atelier versace… what else can be said? she is workin’ it in this dress! you don’t see too many halter straps on the red carpet, but this definitely works. get it girl!

*  *  *

and now… for the worst. yikes, did these ladies have it WRONG.

i was brought to tears laughing so hard at marisa tomei‘s charles james dress. red carpet commentators loved it… until the camera panned down to the bottom. that looks like something that belongs under the dress, not on top! close, but no cigar. for best supporting actress melissa leo, i have one question: why are you wearing a doily to the oscars? please shred this marc bouwer dress as soon as possible. thanks.

nominee michelle williams picks this less-than-flattering sleeved column gown by chanel haute couture. this girl has a rockin’ bod, but even SHE looks awful in this sheet! i would’ve liked to see her in a strapless blue or red gown. next year, next year. resident beauty scarlett johansson slipped up big time in dolce & gabbana. i’m telling you, remove the old-fashioned lace, and i would’ve loved it. the color and cut are gorge, the lace is not.

an unusual choice from cate blanchett (wearing givenchy couture), that i would’ve liked if not for the circle cut-out. the light lavender and gold embellishments are glorious togehter… even the funky sleeves are working! but why is there a target-shaped hole on your chest?! bah!

the fashion report: 2010 Academy Awards

ahhh, the red carpet. this year, i had so much to say that i even live-blogged it. i gotta a lot of opinions… apparently.

the ladies above had me over the moon in awe. kate beckinsale – i dunno, maybe it’s just her rockin’ bod – but she looked incredible in this kaufman franco gown. and playing up her curves big time was j.lo in this little number by giorgio armani prive.

another favorite was glee star lea michele in oscar de la renta. she got it right at the globes too! however, maybe it’s time to go for some color? she’s a fan of black.

penelope cruz chose the gorgeous red ensemble by donna karan. as far as i’m concerned, she can do no wrong. and wrapping out my fave top 5 is rachel mcadams… holy beautiful! she rocked this watercolor elie saab gown. pure perfection.

***

and now for the worst. i almost gagged looking at a few of these. sarah jessica parker leads the pack with this beyond fugly canary-yellow dress by chanel. what’s with the darn neck scarf? and i’m hating the shapelessness. nicole richie was arm candy to fiance joel madden, who DJ’ed the event. unforch, she got it oh-so-wrong in this elvira-esque reen acra dress. stripes at the oscars? i don’t think so.

and charlize. ohhhh charlize what the HECK were you thinking?? the lavender boob-cupping is not flattering. this is one time dior couture was not a good look for her. definitely my “worst dressed” for the evening! now, diane kruger wasn’t quite so bad. i actually would’ve liked her chanel choice had it not been interrupted mid-way by those ruffles. close, but no cigar.

zoe saldana’s gown had the makings of a gorgeous dress… great fit, inventive, sparkly and purple. until the camera panned down to the bottom. what the balls? (literally) this givenchy gown was stirrin’ up quite the controversy. she looks like a paper mache project! and my favorite, as one reporter put it, “how do you say UGLY in na’vi?”

***

and for good measure, i threw in two gentlemen that got it right. first we have my celeb crush ryan reynolds in a classic tom ford tux. you can never go wrong with a good-fitting suit! i have to hand it to robert downey jr. for being inventive here. while i don’t love the blue sunglasses, i am a hug fan of the blue bow tie. his lanvin tuxedo even coordinated well with his wife’s! now, that’s cute.

alright, so what are you thinkin’? agree or disagree on my best/worsts?

it’s oscar time

ahhh my favorite time of the year. the academy awards! tune in to catch the coverage on sunday, march 7th at 5pm PST on ABC.

co-hosted by two of hollywood’s funniest – steve martin and alec baldwin – it’ll be a pretty entertaining show. and ladies, there’ll be plenty of eye candy. award presenters include such gorgeous men as ryan reynolds, keanu reeves, bradley cooper, chris pine & gerard butler.

an amazing line-up of movies are in the running for the night’s top honors… should be exciting! check out all the nominations below, with my picks in pink!

mayor pitt

oh celebs, they’re just like us. or wait, never mind. brad pitt, father of 6, has been making the rounds to promote his latest flick, quentin tarantino-directed ‘inglorious bastards.’ but very little movie talk has actually gone on amidst his interviews. pitt recently appeared on real time with bill maher & recounted his fond memories spent with ms. mary jane herself, marijuana. apparently he’s a giant toke artist!

brad (in the clip above) says he kicked the habit once he became a Dad, so he would be more “alert.” but director tarantino begs to differ. he said the two lit one up when discussing production of the film. we’ve got a liar on our hands!

while his movie ‘inglorious bastards’ actually looks pretty darn good, it remains to be understood why actors can’t just be actors. they certainly take advantage of the platform their given to speak on other topics, albeit unrelated. (academy awards, anyone?) poppa pitt also addressed rumors last week that he’d run for mayor in one of his favorite places, new orleans. today show host ann curry sat down with pitt to discuss the hugely helpful foundation he started to help hurricane victims, the make it right foundation. curry then asked him if he would consider running for mayor, he replied: “yeah, i’m running on the gay marriage, no religion, legalization and taxation of marijuana platform.” wooowww, buddy. good luck with that! check out the video for yourself.

flawless

ms. kate winslet, mother of two, is completely flawless yet again at the SAG awards. her dress is bold, unique, and simply gorgeous – unlike some of the other celebs there! not only did she look fabulous in her Narciso Rodriguez gown, but she also won best supporting actress for her role in ‘the reader’. she is on fiiiiire! 2 Golden Globes, a SAG award, and now up for best actress at the Academy Awards.

another best dressed in my book was anne hathaway. while she didn’t win the ‘best actress’ bid she was up for, her white gown was stunning. the grecian godess-inspired gown was a creation of Azaaro, featuring Cartier jewels. c-c-check ‘er out!

slumdog superstars

you’ll find out soon enough that i am a huge fan of slumdog millionaire. such an incredible movie! slumdog has already gotten 4 Golden Globes, and had been nominated for 10 Academy Awards.

anyway, the two stars of the movie dev patel & freida pinto were on the ellen show last week, and it turned out to be a fun interview. they are so humble, so thankful for the attention their movie is getting. oh and my favorite part – breaking out in a bollywood dance at the end!
