ricky gervais sticks it to ‘em!

very rarely do i write any post-award show coverage that not a fashion report, but this is just too good to pass up.

did you watch the Golden Globes? well, then, you probably already know what this is all about. host ricky gervais had some fun up on that stage! and he does not regret a single moment.

in the span of four minutes, gervais managed to make an enemy of charlie sheen, johnny depp, angelina jolie, the hollywood foreign press association, cher, the entire case and crew of the tourist and sex and the city 2, scientologists, tom cruise, john travolta, hugh hefner, hef’s fiance, and homosexuals in general. whew!

and i’m not talking subtle jabs. i’m talking did-he-really-just-say-that mouth-hanging-open kinda stuff. don’t get me wrong, it WAS funny. but quite controversial! see above for video of his opening monologue.

i personally thought it was the very reason why they hired him. to get people talking! what do YOU think? did he cross the line?

the fashion report: 2011 Golden Globes

i love award season… the suspense, the movies, the chatter, the lovely dresses and the not-so-lovely dresses. we had quite a bit of both this year, actually! we had some interesting fashion choices on the red carpet that always make for a good time. let’s start off with some TRENDS!

*     *     *

we saw quite a lot of PINK on the red carpet this year, and wow, these ladies got it right!

sandra bullock tries out her new bang look with this jenny packham gown. while it’s definitely not my favorite of the night, it wasn’t the worst either. love the detailing, though. and megan fox – what can you say – she’s a stunner in anything. especially this armani prive number. the diamond strap is to die for.

one of my favorites almost every time is ms. lea michele in oscar de la renta. what a gorgeous cut & color! this was by far my top 3 dresses of the night. lea’s glee castmate naya rivera stuck out in her form-fitting douglas hannant gown. perhaps the fact that she has an killer bod is what’s making the dress look so spectacular? rounding out the pinkies was the beautiful claire danes in calvin klein. strikingly pretty!

*     *     *

BLACK also ruled the red carpet this year… with many celebs opting for the classic color instead of bold & brights.

another one of my top 3 favorite looks was eva longoria in zac posen. the fit is genius! but the waist detailing is what makes it a “best dressed.” on my not-so-great list was glee actress jessalyn gilsig, who chose this rather plain get-up from david meister. come on, the Golden Globes are your time to shine! pick something with more attitude next time.

covert affairs actress piper perabo looked totally gorge in her oscar de la renta ensemble. piper completes her look with a sleek pony and gorgeous red lips. bravo! however i’m not so congratulatory of julianne hough‘s marchesa choice. sorry, but the egyptian look is OUT.

and rounding out the group is dexter actress julia stiles. i’m not usually a fan of her fashion sense but she looks just ravishing in romona caveza. the tight fit and ruffle detailing is so very flattering, don’t you think?

*     *     *

now comes the good part… the best dressed!

a few of my “bests” were mixed in above, but here are 6 more that are quite deserving as well. starting off with the iconic beauty, catherine zeta-jones in monique lhuillier. i think my mouth was hanging open a bit on this one. not everyone could pull off this color! simply ravishing. and another perfect choice was anne hathaway in armani prive. so different! so edgy! love the shoulder definition!

red carpet newbie jennifer lawrence stood out from the crowd in this gorgeous louis vuitton ensemble. there’s something so chic about it – the straps & ruffling are simply perfection. modern family stunner sofia vergara chose this siren of a vera wang dress. i’m pretty jazzed about the color, and especially the black accent around the waist.

another repeat winner was camilla belle at an afterparty in giorgio armani. the metallic color and fabric were right on target! and the last of the “best dressed” was the ever-lovely olivia wilde in marchesa. the sweetheart cut and flowering beading put it right up there in my top 3.

*     *     *

absolutely YUCK is the only word to describe the dresses below. sorry ladies, you may be great, but your fashion choice was NOT. the lady up first? angelina jolie! okay, most critics are saying her versace gown was a “hit.” are you kidding me? this looks like something you’d pull out of your grandmother’s closet! the fabric looks cheap and the color is less than flattering.

jennifer lopez promoted her new gig on american idol in this hideous zuhair murad ensemble. j. lo, are you really wearing a shawl to the Golden Globes? again, looks very old-fashioned. blue valentine actress michelle williams struck out in her daisy-inspired valentino gown. i actually do like the cut, but daisy prints belong on your summer picnic frocks, not on your red carpet ballgown.

halle berry: you are so insanely gorgeous. why must you always choose the worst dresses?! this nina ricci design didn’t look that bad… until i saw the sheer overlay. ugh.  and rounding out the “worst” was jennifer love hewitt in romona caveza. hate the cut, hate the bustline, hate the waistline detailing… this was a total “miss” in my book.

*     *     *

so, there you have it! the fashion report for the 2011 Golden Globes. what do YOU think? agree/disagree?

live at the 2011 Golden Globes

7:35 – best actress in a film (drama) goes to natalie portman for black swan. haven’t seen it, as it would probably scare the crap out of me, but i hear she was brilliant.

7:40 – best motion picture comedy/musical: the kids are all right. i personally didn’t like it, but to each their own!

7:49 – so happy for colin firth (the king’s speech) to have finally won a Golden Globe. well-deserved!

7:54 – almost over! to present the final award of the evening, michael douglas. “there’s gotta be an easier way to get a standing ovation.” (referring to his recent battle with cancer… love his sense of humor about it all!)

3:00 – is it weird how excited i am?

3:02 – oh ryan seacrest. i like you, but not nearly as much as you like yourself.

3:03 – okay, wow. olivia wilde is looking FLAWLESS. great color, an even better fit. do i already have a “best dressed?”

3:05 – guiliana rancic looking quite skeletal today. pretty, but she’d look better with some meat on those bones!

3:08 – big bang theory‘s kaley cuoco awkwardly wearing a diamond ring on her ring finger when she’s not engaged? not feeling the hair either.

3:13 – totally awkward live moment on E! with kelly osbourne – stumbling a bit on air. train wrecks are always hard to watch! not loving the dress either.

3:18 – we’re off to a bit of a slow start! let’s get some celebs on the screen, E!

3:19 – j. love hewitt & bf up with on the platform. she really seems to be striking out in the fashion department lately. not loving tonight’s choice of ramona caveza, either BUT her hair and make-up do look lovely.

3:23 – julia stiles of dexter just arrived in a beautiful black ruffle ensemble. wonder if she’ll win for best supporting actress in a tv series?

3:29 – jim parsons of the big bang theory mentions the circular table seating concept of the Globes. i absolutely love how informal it is!

3:56 – pregnant nominee natalie portman looks stunning! love the pink & red, and especially that cute baby bump!

3:59 – breaking news… jimmy fallon & jason segal are “dating” as of this morning. got in an afternoon fight, but now everything’s better ;)

4:02 – i spy with my little eye january jones in brilliant red & emma stone in coral. LOVE IT.

4:09 – precious couple nicole kidman & keith urban up on the platform. sorry, nicole, but this dress is a huge MISS. keith on her rabbit hole role: “it’s important for nic to tell certain stories.” so cute.

4:14 – think i just saw my best dressed of the night: catherine zeta-jones in a stunning jewel-toned gown. wow! and hubby michael douglas reveals his tumor is gone! PRAISE GOD!

4:20 – modern family‘s sofia vergara gets it RIGHT in that beautiful red, hour-glass ensemble by vera wang!

4:26 – uh oh brad & angelina are here! angie in a versace green sparkle gown. pretty, but looks pretty old-fashioned. i think it’s funny that they always bypass E!.

4:27 – mila kunis in green too! WOW, love that color.

4:33 – another best dressed… temple grandin‘s claire danes! so pretty in pink and loving her jewelry.

4:36 – lea michele is always one of my faves, and tonight was no different. check her out!

johnny depp’s the tourist

the tourist – due out on december 10th – is posing quite the problem for me. you see, johnny depp looks absolutely genius in it.

but angelina jolie? i mean, come on, how 2-dimensional can you be! she always plays the same darn character… the beautifully mysterious woman who is too pretty to be involved in crime and violence but is anyway. not to mention the fact that she only has two “looks” – the playful smirk and the sexy smirk. ground-breaking, i know.

what are you in for during the flick?

“depp stars as an American tourist whose playful dalliance with a stranger leads to a web of intrigue, romance and danger in the tourist. during an impromptu trip to Europe to mend a broken heart, frank (depp) unexpectedly finds himself in a flirtatious encounter with elise (jolie) , an extraordinary woman who deliberately crosses his path. against the breathtaking backdrop of Paris and Venice, their whirlwind romance quickly evolves as they find themselves unwittingly thrust into a deadly game of cat and mouse.”

i suppose johnny is WAY too good to pass up. but still the question remains, to see or not to see?

brangelina’s newest addition

they’re at it again! brad & angelina have shown us once again that they can do whatever the heck they want. case in point, their brand new $40 million “vacation” home in northern italy.

the crazy huge villa features a ridiculous 18,000 square feet, home, movie theater, 15 bedrooms and two swimming pools. you know, because one swimming pool isn’t enough.

keep in mind, this just their vacation home. they won’t even live there most of the time! but rest assured when they do, maddox, pax, zahara, shiloh vivienne and knox will have no problems squeezing in there.

home sweet $74M

bradandangelinaprovencehouse

got an extra $74 million lying around? you just missed out on this beautiful home in provence, france recently purchased by angelina jolie & brad pitt.  actually, ‘home’ may not be the right word to encapsulate a place with 35 bedrooms. i know they have 6 kids but why the heck do they need 35 bedrooms?

according to the mirror, the 17th century chateau boasts more than 1,000 acres. apparently brad & ange have been leasing the property for the past year and finally decided to bite the buying bullet. the couple also plan to spend a bundle renovating the place – making many of the rooms more modern. what additions are they thinking of, you ask? a new gym, wine bar, jacuzzis, a steamroom & spa and a motorbike track for mr. pitt.

as angie’s mom was french canadian, it’s not surprising that they chose the south of france as their home base. they’ve also said that their children are able to lead a more normal life there. yes, because it is so very normal to grow up in a $74M mansion!

making it rain

angejen

forbes magazine just published their annual celebrity 100 list, which catalogs hollywood’s top-earning actresses among other things. the mag generated the list based off of info from agents, managers, producers & laywers to determine what these leading ladies have earned over the course of the year. of course they get big paychecks up front for their movie roles, but you can’t forget back-end bonuses for big box office hits.

angelina jolie tops the list, with jennifer aniston close behind. angie came in big from her role in ‘wanted’, which grossed $341 million worldwide. she also got a fatty paycheck for her upcoming spy thriller ‘salt.’

aniston’s ‘marley & me’ knocked her on up to the number two spot, as the family flick is still making a killing in the box office & on dvd sales. jennifer also gets plenty of residual money for her role as rachel in the tv series ‘friends.’ syndication dollars, anyone? here is a list of the rest of the ladies, with oscar winner kate winslet rounding out the top 15.

1 - Angelina Jolie, $27 million
2 – Jennifer Aniston, $25 million
3 – Meryl Streep, $24 million
4 – Sarah Jessica Parker, $23 million
5 – Cameron Diaz, $20 million
6 – Sandra Bullock, $15 million
6 – Reese Witherspoon, $15 million
8 – Nicole Kidman, $12 million
8 – Drew Barrymore, $12 million
10 – Renee Zellweger, $10 million
11 – Cate Blanchett, $8 million
12 – Anne Hathaway, $7 million
12 – Halle Berry, $7 million
14 – Scarlett Johansson, $5.5 million
15 – Kate Winslet, $2 million

here’s the biggest shocker, though. apparently there is quite a big difference between the earning of the top 10 actresses and the top 10 actors. the top 10 actresses earned $183 million, compared with $393 million for the top 10 actors. that’s a pretty significant gap! i wonder why?

and the winners are…

best dressed at the oscars! it should come as no surprise that these beauties came dressed to impress. while i didn’t have a stand-out favorite, all of them looked fab. first up, best actress nominee anne hathaway. in armani prive, the dress was made up of hundreds of subtle iridescent discs. loving the accent around the waist, and of course the slight mermaid-ish bottom.

another fan favorite was angelina jolie. for the first time during award season, i feel like she chose the right look. she looks best in the dark colors, hair up with bold jewelry. in this elie saab floor-length gown, she was looking the part for the evening. while i can’t STAND her horrible attitude, all ‘high-and-mighty’, it can’t be denied that she was one of the best dressed.

and lastly, ‘best actress’ winner – the woman who can do no wrong in my eyes – kate winslet. she is the epitome of class. her pick for oscar night actually surprised me. and it took me a while to fall in love with it. yves st. laurent hand-crafted her gown for the evening, an assymetrical gray and black creation.
