the fashion report: 2011 Academy Awards

the 83rd annual academy awards are over, which means one thing: the fashion police are out and in full effect!

beside being entirely underwhelmed at last night’s production (sorry james & anne!), there were definitely some fashion stand-outs. check out my picks for best and worst dressed, and more!

*  *  *

i’ll start with my faves.

first up, miss reese witherspoon in a to-die-for ensemble. this giorgio armani prive gown is so simple, yet beautifully elegant. kudos to that hair do as well! and the best actress academy-award winner herself, natalie portman, shined in this marroon rodarte dress. perfect choice for her growing baby bump too! love the off-the-shoulder detailing.

‘best song’ performer mandy moore chose this subdued monique lhuillier gown. this is how you do red carpet, folks. her look is flawless right down to the exceptional fit of the dress. black swan actress mila kunis took lavender to new heights when she donned this elie saab haute couture beauty. breathtaking details and gorgeous overall design. loved it.

rounding out my top 5 was matthew mcconaughey’s baby momma camilla alves in kaufman franco. WOW, is all i can say. i couldn’t have been more in love with this choice… the ruching and lay of the skirt was muy fantastico!

*  *  *

we saw lots of RED on this year’s red carpet… and i must say they look radiant.

oscar host anne hathaway‘s chose this valentino gown for her first dress of the evening. while i liked the look, how much more svelte would this have been without the additions to the skirt? i would’ve gone ga-ga over this if it were a column dress. but good job, anne, i do like! newcomer jennifer lawrence tore it up in this form-fitting calvin klein collection gown. let’s call a spade a spade… she’s hot.

one of my favorites of the night – sandra b in vera wang! simply ravishing! that waist is perfection. i would’ve liked to see her wear her hair down for a change, but she still looks scrumptious. new mommy penelope cruz accompanied her nominated hubby (javier bardem) in l’wren scott. wasn’t my fave of the night, but you gotta hand it to her – she looks great!

presenter jennifer hudson wowed the crowd in atelier versace… what else can be said? she is workin’ it in this dress! you don’t see too many halter straps on the red carpet, but this definitely works. get it girl!

*  *  *

and now… for the worst. yikes, did these ladies have it WRONG.

i was brought to tears laughing so hard at marisa tomei‘s charles james dress. red carpet commentators loved it… until the camera panned down to the bottom. that looks like something that belongs under the dress, not on top! close, but no cigar. for best supporting actress melissa leo, i have one question: why are you wearing a doily to the oscars? please shred this marc bouwer dress as soon as possible. thanks.

nominee michelle williams picks this less-than-flattering sleeved column gown by chanel haute couture. this girl has a rockin’ bod, but even SHE looks awful in this sheet! i would’ve liked to see her in a strapless blue or red gown. next year, next year. resident beauty scarlett johansson slipped up big time in dolce & gabbana. i’m telling you, remove the old-fashioned lace, and i would’ve loved it. the color and cut are gorge, the lace is not.

an unusual choice from cate blanchett (wearing givenchy couture), that i would’ve liked if not for the circle cut-out. the light lavender and gold embellishments are glorious togehter… even the funky sleeves are working! but why is there a target-shaped hole on your chest?! bah!

*  *  *

must-see fall flicks

fall is upon us! well, almost. get prepped for a fun fall movie line-up featuring reese witherspoon, katie holmes, owen wilson, anne hathaway, jake gyllenhaal, paul rudd, josh duhamel and more…

*  *  *

first up is katie holmes’ the romantics, hitting theaters september 10th. while i’ve never been a big fan of katie’s, this movie is looking really interesting.

co-starring anna paquin, josh duhamel and malin akerman, the romantics is about seven close friends who reunite for a bride and groom’s big day. but with a tagline like “nothing complicates friendship like love,” you know there’s trouble brewing. watch the trailer below. doesn’t it have a sort of rachel getting married feel?

*  *  *

set for a thanksgiving release date is anne hathaway and jake gyllenhaal in love and other drugs.

“hathaway portrays maggie, an alluring free spirit who won’t let anyone – or anything – tie her down. but she meets her match in jamie (gyllenhaal), whose relentless and nearly infallible charm serve him well with the ladies and in the cutthroat world of pharmaceutical sales. maggie and jamie’s evolving relationship takes them both by surprise, as they find themselves under the influence of the ultimate drug: love.”

sort of your typical rom-com. but these two are dynamite together. don’t wanna miss this one!

*  *  *

and lastly is how do you know with an all-star cast of reese witherspoon, paul rudd and owen wilson. looks like we got a bit of a love triangle on our hands!

due out this Christmas, we’ll see reese ponder the age-old dilemma – how do you really know if he’s the ONE? the flick also starts jack nicholson, so you know it’ll be good.

surrender your gifts, anne hathaway!

poor annie! how would you like to be showered with lovely gifts, and then have them all taken away? oh, and also your boyfriend gets arrested and goes to jail?

the beautiful anne hathaway has dealt with a lot the past few years. namely, her “trusting” bf, raffaello follieri, was sentenced to 4/5 years to prison for his financial exploits. she insists the rug was pulled far over her eyes – why else would she stick with this slimeball?

back in 2008, the government seized almost all of follieri’s property, including anything gifted to girlfriend anne. now, the government is requesting the rights to sell it all to cover the 2.4 million debt he racked up.

judging by the seizure legal papers, it is clear that anne was spoiled rotten by this guy! they plan to auction off:

“all jewelry, watches, and other items recovered in or about august 2008 from an individual who received them from the defendant, which includes the following: one gold colored Rolex watch; one silver colored Rolex watch; one gold colored ring with light blue-green stone; one silver colored chain approximately sixteen inches long with a cross pendant and blue and clear stones; one pair of colored silver earrings with silver clasps and blue and clear stones; one gold colored ring with clear stones around the band; one silver colored bracelet with floral design and light blue and clear stones; one silver colored bracelet with clear stones; one silver colored necklace approximately sixteen inches long with five flower shaped designs and clear stones; one five-strand necklace approximately sixteen inches long with pearl beads; one gold colored chain approximately thirty-two inches long with a gold colored pendant with a red-brown stone and a gold colored tassel; and one louis vuitton box.”

whew, that’s quite the jewelry collection! but i suppose, why would she want to keep it anyway? only bad memories. good riddance, watches and necklaces!

the fashion report: 2010 MET ball

the MET ball (noun): a gala held at the metropolitan museum of art in which celebs far & wide gather for one purpose – to pay homage to fashion. look FIERCE, or leave.

i gots to say, i was more impressed than i usually am with the MET red carpet. there were definitely some shining moments. i couldn’t narrow down my picks for best – i chose 7! not much to say about the four above. heavenly, i believe would be sufficient enough to describe camilla belle (in jason wu), mila kunis (in vera wang), melania trump (in christian siriano), and anne hathaway (in valentino – her fave). WOW.

below, jennifer lopez worked it ouuuut in zuhair murad. love the silhouette and the design scheme – perfect for her coloring. jessica alba channels old school hollywood in this champagne colored sophie theallet gown. and i’m loving model bar rafeali’s choice of the hem, showing off her gorgeous gams in this rag & bone ensemble.

she’s been off the map recently, but claire danes came in strong at the MET ball, donning a brilliant form-fitting burberry gown. and of course, i loved rachel weisz’s custom-made oscar de la renta gown. who doesn’t appreciate a splash of color?

*   *   *

the MET ball saw a lot of white this year… some did it good, some, not so good. diane kruger chose this calvin klein gown – a great look for her. take a gander at those curves! really not jealous at all! jessica biel rocked the greek goddess look in her ralph lauren collection dress… loved the gown, hate the hair. two-toned brown has never been my thing.

kirsten dunst – what’s with the hemline? i can’t stand the it’s-a-long-dress-but-not-quite-touching-the-floor kinda thing. her rodarte for gap dress had me less than impressed. taylor swift was a different story in her ralph lauren collection ensemble – very age-appropriate and feminine. she might try switching the hairstyle every once in awhile… it’s pretty much the same on every red carpet.

and one of my faves for the night, emma watson in burberry. the stunner can do no wrong in my eyes… gorgeous!

*   *   *

aaaaand for the worst. and man, where there some unflattering choices! dear, sweet kristen stewart. in other words, what the heck is wrong with you? this chanel dress is HEINOUS in every way possible. and what’s with the hair/make-up? time to fire the stylist. the lovely gisele bundchen seems a little more like catwoman than a sophisticated MET attendee. not feeling the alexander wang gown at all.

sienna miller almost had it right in her emilio pucci gown – how much more gorgeous would it be as a full-length? and tina fey, oh tina fey. just because you’re known for being “funny” doesn’t mean you have to dress like crap. who wears a jumpsuit to the MET ball… honestly.

no words for katy perry. her cute circuit dress has actual LED lights included. doesn’t that just scream classy?

*   *   *

so, what do YOU think? agree/disagree with my picks?

made of gold?

don’t get me wrong, i’m a huge julia roberts fan. but come on, is she made of gold?

if you ventured out into the theaters this weekend to indulge in the celebrity love fest that is ‘valentine’s day,’ you might’ve caught a glimpse of the actress. judging from the trailer, we would’ve thought julia was a prime player. but as it turns out, she’s only in the film for roughly 6 minutes!

but that’s not the ridiculous part. for her part in the lovey-dovey flick, america’s sweetheart was paid $3 MILLION! that’s about $500,000 a minute. for that kinda cash, those better be the best 6 minutes of our lives!!

apparently roberts agreed to the part as a favor to director garry marshall. after casting her, it was much easier to get stars like jessica biel, ashton kutcher and anne hathaway on board. i guess only the box office can tell if julia was worth that paycheck… we’ll find out soon!

burton’s world

director tim burton has always welcomed us with open arms into his mixed-up little mind. from ’beetle juice’ to ‘sweeny todd,’  burton has shown us that his imagination might be a bit more imaginative than our own. his latest project? the disney classic ‘alice in wonderland.’

from the moment the new project was announced, we knew we were in for a treat. let’s be honest, ‘alice in wonderland’ is a weird movie even before burton touched it! he of course cast his two muses in the flick – actress/wife helena bonham carter & actor johnny depp. depp takes on the role of the mad hatter with bonham carter as the red queen. current hollywood ‘it’ girl anne hathaway co-stars as the white queen, and newbie mia wasikowska portrays little miss alice.

with such a bomb cast & brilliant cinematography no doubt, ‘alice in wonderland’ will fit perfectly in tim burton’s line of work. check out the trailer for the movie above - it was just released at comic-con this past weekend. ‘alice in wonderland’ is set to hit theaters march 5, 2010. why so long, darn it!

making it rain

angejen

forbes magazine just published their annual celebrity 100 list, which catalogs hollywood’s top-earning actresses among other things. the mag generated the list based off of info from agents, managers, producers & laywers to determine what these leading ladies have earned over the course of the year. of course they get big paychecks up front for their movie roles, but you can’t forget back-end bonuses for big box office hits.

angelina jolie tops the list, with jennifer aniston close behind. angie came in big from her role in ‘wanted’, which grossed $341 million worldwide. she also got a fatty paycheck for her upcoming spy thriller ‘salt.’

aniston’s ‘marley & me’ knocked her on up to the number two spot, as the family flick is still making a killing in the box office & on dvd sales. jennifer also gets plenty of residual money for her role as rachel in the tv series ‘friends.’ syndication dollars, anyone? here is a list of the rest of the ladies, with oscar winner kate winslet rounding out the top 15.

1 - Angelina Jolie, $27 million
2 – Jennifer Aniston, $25 million
3 – Meryl Streep, $24 million
4 – Sarah Jessica Parker, $23 million
5 – Cameron Diaz, $20 million
6 – Sandra Bullock, $15 million
6 – Reese Witherspoon, $15 million
8 – Nicole Kidman, $12 million
8 – Drew Barrymore, $12 million
10 – Renee Zellweger, $10 million
11 – Cate Blanchett, $8 million
12 – Anne Hathaway, $7 million
12 – Halle Berry, $7 million
14 – Scarlett Johansson, $5.5 million
15 – Kate Winslet, $2 million

here’s the biggest shocker, though. apparently there is quite a big difference between the earning of the top 10 actresses and the top 10 actors. the top 10 actresses earned $183 million, compared with $393 million for the top 10 actors. that’s a pretty significant gap! i wonder why?
