the fashion report: 2010 Emmy Awards

is it just me, or were the emmys really great this year? i was genuinely entertained, which is more than i can say for year’s past. from the opening number to genre montages… the show had me laughing the whole way through!

but let’s talk fashion.

*  *  *

my picks for best dressed included a wide range of styles, beginning with a navy j. mendel gown from modern family star julie bowen. the cut, color and detailing were stunning – although, i wasn’t such a fan of her messy half-updo. the office‘s jenna fischer wowed in this brilliant red versace number. honestly it was the color that drew me to this one… any other color and this would’ve been a “worst” instead of “best.”

dianna agron of glee fame took a chance with this tiered lacey carolina herrera gown, and i think it paid off. critics have been 50/50, but i loved it. very feminine and pretty. seriously, could claire danes have a better body? she looks stunning in her metallic armani prive ensemble. the temple grandin star even took home an emmy for best actress! as keri russell took the red carpet, i was floored with her jean louis scherrer dress. so simple! so chic! love everything about it.

but my hands-down best dressed was glee star lea michelle, in this oscar de la renta gown. i mean, absolutely perfect!

*  *  *

we saw a lot of white this year from the ladies of TV. dexter’s julie benz and law & order‘s mariska hargitay both went for the angelic white with their choices (pamella roland and vera wang, respectively). i must say i was completely disappointed with kim kardashian’s marchesa gown. she’s got the best body and coloring, i was hoping for some vibrant red or orange.

brooke burke, perfect bod as usual, chose her mark zunino dress no doubt for the sexy cutout and flattering sweetheart top. the white worked for her, but definitely not for csi: miami star eva la rue. everything from the hair to the cheap-looking gown was a complete no-no for me.

damages actress rose byrne took liberties with her white gucci dress. i love the gold features – a nice added touch.

*  *  *

next up, the WORST. and let me tell you, there were some bad mistakes in this line-up. the usual stunner heidi klum struck out big time in her strapless short marchesa choice. terrible, terrible decision. but nothing was worse than true blood‘s anna paquin in this horrific alexander mcqueen gown. the embellishments, the bodice texture, the hemline… a complete tranwreck.

and here’s a glee star who got it wrong! naya rivera looks like a cake topper in this 80′s-inspired get-up. spare us the fashion flashback! the beyond gorgeous sofia vergara sadly struck out in this horribly ugly carolina herrera gown. not only was the color just plain bad, but the cheesy sparkles simply sealed her fate.

what even needs to be said about mindy kaling‘s dress? the office star got it wrong. as did TV veteran lauren graham. who picked that out for her? she’s got too much of a rockin’ figure to be holed up in this sub-par ensemble. oh well, maybe next year girls!

live at the 2010 Emmy Awards

5:01 – opening act! glee cast + jimmy fallon + kate goseelin (SO FUNNY!) + randy jackson + john hamm + betty white + joel mchale = AMAZING.

5:06 – jimmy seems out of breath! understandably so.

5:07 – a conan o’brien jab within the first 5 minutes! love it. he can take it like the best of them.

5:10 – okay, this comedy montage is just the best. how are people so clever? the writing on these shows are just amazing.

5:13 – eric stonestreet for modern family takes home the first emmy! YES. so cute, co-star jesse tyler ferguson out in the audience tearing up with joy.

5:18 – the pc guyis a backstage commentator! giving the audience fun facts about winners as they walk up on stage. love it!

5:21 – modern family wins AGAIN!!! (best writing for a comedy series) so happy!!

5:24 – outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series: glee’s jane lynch – her first emmy win. on actresses, “most of us are actors because we have no other recognizable skills.” HA!

5:31 – matthew perry is presenter. haven’t seen him in awhile. welcome back!

5:35 – love this modern family skit with george clooney! why is this the best show EVER?

5:38 – jim parsons for big bang theory takes home best actor in comedy series! WOW, unexpected, but well deserved.

5:45 – a definite upset! over usual winner tina fey, nurse jackie‘s edie falco wins for lead actress in a comedy series!

5:49 – WILL ARNETT IS AMAZINGLY HILARIOUS.

5:49 – emmy for best reality tv program goes to top chef! another upset, as amazing race has won it the past SEVEN years!

5:57 – i love jimmy’s funny song introductions for each genre! (comedy with amy poehler, reality with kim kardashian, drama with julianna marguiles)

6:02 – aww, too bad. mad men and breaking bad won for writing & best supporting actor respectively instead of LOST. i was really wanting them to go out with a well-deserved bang!

6:15 – ooo! just caught george clooney and girlfriend elisabetta canalis canoodling backstage. cute!

6:21 – a win for dexter! another of my faves. steve shill wins for best director of a drama series.

6:23 – jimmy doing a amazing lyrical montage of shows now off the air - 24, LOST and law & order. (the latter was on TV for 21 seasons!)

6:32 – SO HAPPY for kyra sedgwick! celebrating her first emmy win for the closer after being nominated 4 times. her hubs of 22 years kevin bacon tearing up in the audience :)

6:46 – presenter ricky gervias: “hello, me again… don’t worry, i’m saving all the offensive stuff for the golden globes.”

6:48 – did anyone catch that? when ricky handed out complimentary beers, matthew perry politely refused. he’s got a history, so good for him!

6:53 – DARN! i was really hoping that conan o’brien would take home the emmy for best variety series. john stewart‘s the daily show wins! “the competition is amazing but we keep winning it.”

6:59 – george clooney is presented the bob hope humanitarian award. SO well-deserved! he makes a good point: everyone jumps at the chance to help in the aftermath of a disaster, but what about 6 months after? 5 year after?

7:09 – prooobably the most awkward moment ever when winner julia ormand of temple grandin tries to honor her fellow nominees and forgets their names?!

7:18 – in memoriam tribute with jewel: art linkletter, dennis hopper, roy disney, corey haim, gary coleman, rue mcclanahan, brittany murphy, et al.

7:28 – yay for temple grandin‘s claire danes! what a skill to portray an autistic character.

7:39 – wow, presenter anna paquin’s dress is UGLY.

7:46 – tom hanks’ the pacific wins for best miniseries! i love hearing tom hanks speak. he’s the best!

7:49 – the lady accepting temple grandin‘s best miniseries emmy was having a major boob moment. i mean, literally i was waiting for it to pop out.

7:51 – some stiff competition for outstanding drama series… but mad men takes it home (for the 3rd time in a row)!

7:57 – WHOOOOO modern family wins outstanding comedy series! can’t believe it!

8:00 – well, that was fun. time for dinner!

live on the red carpet: the 2010 Emmy Awards

3:00 – it’s staaaaaarting!!

3:01 – glee‘s jane lynch jumps on the stage with ryan seacrest. in purple! i’m likin’ the choice.

3:04 – ryan and guiliana‘s small talk is always so awkward on camera.

3:04 – i ran into guiliana at the neil george salon in beverly hills a year ago. she is TINY. even tinier in person.

3:05 – host jimmy fallon and his wife (aww!). didn’t know he was married? quote from jim on hosting, “i wanna play with everybody, i want everybody involved.”

3:11 – ross matthews… the intern from the tonight show with jay leno… is apparently a fashion correspondent??

3:14 – E!’s glamcam 360 is actually quite helpful when evaluating fashion choices! nice!

3:15 – both dancing with the stars carrie ann inaba and kelly osbourne both in shimmering black. LOVING kelly’s get-up.

3:16 – jersey shore cast live via satellite. GAG ME. back to the real stars, please!

3:18 – ty burrell from modern family. seriously one of my FAVORITE character actors of all time. love him love him.

3:20 – just read a spoiler about the emmy’s opening. host j. fallon, randy jackson, tina fey, john hamm and others are rocking out in a choreographed musical number. fun!

3:25 – mayor of LA antonio villaraigosa says emmy’s have an economic impact of $450 millions dollars. “there’s more jobs behind the camera than in front.”

3:33 – kathy griffin and her momma giving ryan crap for winning the emmy over kathy’s show.

3:34 – AWKWARD. glee’s mark salling trying to make light and change the subject when asked about incident with co-star.

3:36 – kim kardashian wearing marchesa. good choice of style, but not loving the hair. wear it down next time, kim!

3:37 – glee‘s lea michelle looking absolutely stunning in oscar de la renta. okay, not a fan of glee, but she looks perfect!

3:39 – claire danes nominated for HBO’s temple grandin. WOW, that armani prive dress. just gorgeous style and coloring.

3:41 – OOOO fun. american idol‘s nigel lythgoe says all judges must be announced within the next 3 weeks.

3:46 – modern family‘s sofia vergara… absolutely love her! but not feeling the dress as much. good news: her bf is recovering well from his car accident.

3:48 – mad men‘s john hamm talking about growing up in st. louis, MO! whoo hoo give it up for my hometown!

3:51 – exec producer ricky gervais says he is definitely NOT replacing steve carrell. boo! but news is that portia de rossi might. love that idea!

3:59 – mad men january jones in a brilliant blue versace gown. what a HIT. interesting bodice and hem.

4:09 – newlyweds stephen moyer and anna paquin from true blood talkin’ the racy rolling stone mag cover.

4:11 – heidi klum in a SHORT black marchesa dress. hmm, haven’t seen any short dresses for quite some time. nice to switch it up!

4:13 – hysterical! noticing both mindy kaling and heidi are wearing similar styles, she says “see, me and heidi usually touch base before every award show, just to make sure we’re wearing the same thing.”

4:16 – random flashes of brooke burke and true blood‘s nina dobrev… LOVE love love their choices.

4:18 - how i met your mother’s neil patrick harris and ryan chatting about babies…”see, ryan if you wait until you’re NOT busy, you’ll never have kids!” ryan: “okay, i’ll start trying tonight.]

4:23 – doing crunches during commercial breaks. mutli-tasking at its finest!

4:25 – amy poehler and will arnett celebrating their 7th wedding anniversary and the birth of their 2nd child (just 3 weeks ago)! amy’s sportin’ about $500,000 worth of jewels…!

4:31 – steve carell and his lovely wife. i don’t want to hear any more news on him leaving the office. i still refuse to believe it.

4:41 – ed o’neil on being the only male cast member of modern family that was NOT nominated. his castmates call him the “glue that holds everyone together!”

4:44 – the office‘s john krasinski looks FABulous in his bow-tie suit attire.

4:47 – guiliana with glee‘s diana agron makes a good point. she’s not well-known enough to snub out on the questions! that’s reserved for uber-celebs like julia roberts & angelina jolie.

4:54 – paula abdul on the red carpet! can she please come back to american idol? the show needs her!

4:57 – a quick glimpse of keri russell in this amazing pink halter gown. a surprising yet refreshing choice!

streaking for emmy votes

pretty genius!

the brilliant new TV show, modern family, is pulling out all the stops to win their first emmy award. and even though they (definitely) deserve to win for outstanding comedy, they have a trick up their sleeve that might helps sway some extra votes.

enter, variety magazine ad. they tout… “if modern family wins the emmy for oustanding comedy, [star] sofia vergara will run naked down sunset blvd.” sounds good enough. i mean, sofia is a latin goddess!

but did you notice that fine print?  “cast member subject to change without notice.” HA! we could have the voluptuous eric stonestreet or even some ed o’neil on our hands. so, the question remains… do you take the risk? i say YES.

television’s big night

it’s the celebration of television! the emmy awards, hosted by neil patrick harris, featured a plethora of your favorite shows & stars – all there to honor the industry’s best. the telecast garnered a viewership of 13.3 million, an impressive 11% increase from last year’s show.

we’re all used to ’30 rock’ being big winners, which of course this year they were as well (best comedy, best lead actor), but i was happy to see some other well-deserved victories. the lovely toni collette won the emmy for best actress in a comedy series (‘united states of tara’). and for his role as ben in ‘lost’, michael emerson won best supporting actor. i also thought it was very fitting for justin timberlake to win best guest host for his hilarious stints on ‘saturday night live.’ click here for a full list of this year’s honorees.

emmysbest

but let’s be honest – you just wanna know who looked good and who failed miserably! best dressed, shall we? i have to give it up to ‘eastwick’ star lindsay price. my oh my she looked stunning in a dress by j. mendel. and emmy award-winning actress toni collette found this drop-dead gorgeous monique l’huillier gown. just plain WOW. who would’ve thought that toni would show up in – of all things – a pink, frilly dress!

 emmysworst

as for the worst? well, see for yourself. blake lively, star of ‘gossip girl,’ was on track with a beautiful versace gown… that is until she sliced it down to her navel. it’s just a bit much, yes? and the long, braided ponytail is a little too ‘xena warrior princess’ for my taste. then there’s poor sarah silverman. definitely not a flattering look on her! this is all sorts of wrong. especially the weird hip-bouffant action going on.

the trend of the night? white gowns. we’ve got january jones (‘mad men’) in atelier versace, olivia wilde (‘house’) in marchesa, leighton meester (‘gossip girl’) in bottega veneta & kim kardashian in ina soltani. january & olivia, i’m loving it. as for the other two ladies, i’m not as enthused. kim must’ve known she would get some ‘saturday night fever’ cracks in that outfit!

giggity goodness

familyguy

seth macfarlane has done it again! it appears that breaking records with his hit animated series ‘family guy’ is just an everyday occurrence for the talented writer.

back in 2008 macfarlane inked a $100 million deal with fox to keep him doing what he does best – being funny with ’family guy’ - until 2012. no other animator has ever enjoyed such success. let’s face it, ‘family guy’ is a hilarious goldmine.

and apparently it isn’t just the show’s millions of fans that think so! today, emmy nominations were revealed for the september 20th award ceremony. and whaddya know, the show came up big. ‘family guy’ was nominated in a quite prestigious category – outstanding comedy series! in the history of the emmy awards, there has only been one other animated series nominated in this cateogry (hanna-barbera’s ‘the flintstones’ in 1961).

while i have been a loyal fan of the show for quite some time, they are up against some pretty heavy hitters. other nominated comedy series are ‘entourage,’ ‘flight of the conchords,’ ‘how i met your mother,’ ‘the office,’ ’30 rock,’ & ‘weeds.’ i must say i am so over ’30 rock’ taking home all the tv comedy awards. this year, i’m rooting for a griffin family victory! go ‘family guy!’
