ricky gervais sticks it to ‘em!

very rarely do i write any post-award show coverage that not a fashion report, but this is just too good to pass up.

did you watch the Golden Globes? well, then, you probably already know what this is all about. host ricky gervais had some fun up on that stage! and he does not regret a single moment.

in the span of four minutes, gervais managed to make an enemy of charlie sheen, johnny depp, angelina jolie, the hollywood foreign press association, cher, the entire case and crew of the tourist and sex and the city 2, scientologists, tom cruise, john travolta, hugh hefner, hef’s fiance, and homosexuals in general. whew!

and i’m not talking subtle jabs. i’m talking did-he-really-just-say-that mouth-hanging-open kinda stuff. don’t get me wrong, it WAS funny. but quite controversial! see above for video of his opening monologue.

i personally thought it was the very reason why they hired him. to get people talking! what do YOU think? did he cross the line?

live at the 2011 Golden Globes

let the fun begin!

5:00 – and here we go. did you catch my red carpet coverage?

5:01 – host ricky gervais: “it’s going to be a night of partying & heavy drinking. or as charlie sheen calls it, breakfast.”

5:03 – i LOVE that ricky just dumped on johnny depp & angelina jolie‘s the tourist. hilarious.

5:04 – ricky on sex & the city 2: “girls, we know how old you are.”

5:06 – no one is safe here! ricky’s already insulted scientologists, hugh hefner, mel gibson, jewish people & “secret” gays!

5:08 – presentor scarlett johansson not looking her best this year.

5:09 – best supporting actor: christian bale, for the fighter! SO HAPPY! what a cute speech.

5:13 – total shocker! sons of anarchy katey sagal takes home the best supporting actress award after being nominated 5 times good for her!

5: 17 – sorry julianne more, but you struck out here. it would’ve been pretty, but that sleeve is getting in the way!

5:22 – “please welcome, ashton kutcher‘s dad, bruce willis!”

5:24 – newbie chris colfer wins best supporting actor in a tv series (comedy) for glee and kids rejoice around the world!

5: 33 – best actor in a tv series (drama): the amazing steve buscemi for boardwalk empire!

5:40 – i guess this means i should start watching boardwalk empire – the newly-crowned best tv series (drama).

5:45 – “he’s alec from the rock, she’s jenny from the block… if the block is that one near rodeo.”

5:48 – there ya go, burlesque. music is your thing… NOT the best picture category.

5:50 – …and the social network takes home it’s first award of the night! (best musical score for a film) will it win best picture as well?

5:55 – wait, why is justin bieber at the Golden Globes?! and i love that his similarly-aged co-presenter hailee steinfeld is taller than him. oh, puberty.

5:59 – toy story 3 wins for best animated feature film! ts3 director to presenters: “were you guys even born when the first toy story movie came out?”

6:00 – words can’t describe how much i love robert downey jr.. “i don’t know if an actress can do her best work until i sleep with her.”

6:03 – called it! annette bening wins best actress in a comedy/musical film for the kids are all right. would you just look at that hair of hers? not her best look.

6:19 – al pacino for you don’t know jack & claire danes for temple grandin taking home awards just as they did at the 2010 Emmy‘s! congrats!

6:25 – thank you steve carrell & tina fey for bringing some laughs! whew, we needed it.

6:26 – best screenplay goes to aaron sorkin for the social network! tina fey: “thank you for ruining our ability to interact in real life.”

6:28 – i love that sorkin did a little shoutout to real-life mark zuckerberg, calling him a true genuis & altruist. he didn’t deserve the negative light that was cast upon him!

6:36 – best foreign language film: “the category that no one in America cares about!” (winner: in a better world)

6:48 – wow, big bang theory is blowin’ up! jim parsons wins for best actor in a tv series (comedy). just got picked up for 3 more years.

6:53 – YES. melissa leo for the fighter takes home best supporting actress in a film (drama).

7:04 – lifetime achievement award to robert deniro. so iconic.

7:15 – …and the social network wins again for best director (david fincher)!

7:28 – paul giamatti of barney’s version takes home the Golden Globe for best actor in a musical/comedy film. NBC keeps preemptively bleeping out speeches since it’s a live show. wonder what he said?

7:35 – best actress in a film (drama) goes to natalie portman for black swan. haven’t seen it, as it would probably scare the crap out of me, but i hear she was brilliant.

7:40 – best motion picture comedy/musical: the kids are all right. i personally didn’t like it, but to each their own!

7:49 – so happy for colin firth (the king’s speech) to have finally won a Golden Globe. well-deserved!

7:54 – almost over! to present the final award of the evening, michael douglas. “there’s gotta be an easier way to get a standing ovation.” (referring to his recent battle with cancer… love his sense of humor about it all!)

7:55 – best picture? the social network! yes, it was good. but i would’ve loved to see inception or the fighter take it home. oh well!

8:00 – welp, that was fun! hope you enjoyed the coverage.

live on the red carpet: the 2011 Golden Globes

award season is here! let’s kick it off with the 2011 Golden Globes… one of the most fun award shows all season. read below for live coverage of the red carpet!

3:00 – is it weird how excited i am?

3:02 – oh ryan seacrest. i like you, but not nearly as much as you like yourself.

3:03 – okay, wow. olivia wilde is looking FLAWLESS. great color, an even better fit. do i already have a “best dressed?”

3:05 – guiliana rancic looking quite skeletal today. pretty, but she’d look better with some meat on those bones!

3:08 – big bang theory‘s kaley cuoco awkwardly wearing a diamond ring on her ring finger when she’s not engaged? not feeling the hair either.

3:13 – totally awkward live moment on E! with kelly osbourne – stumbling a bit on air. train wrecks are always hard to watch! not loving the dress either.

3:18 – we’re off to a bit of a slow start! let’s get some celebs on the screen, E!

3:19 – j. love hewitt & bf up with on the platform. she really seems to be striking out in the fashion department lately. not loving tonight’s choice of ramona caveza, either BUT her hair and make-up do look lovely.

3:23 – julia stiles of dexter just arrived in a beautiful black ruffle ensemble. wonder if she’ll win for best supporting actress in a tv series?

3:29 – jim parsons of the big bang theory mentions the circular table seating concept of the Globes. i absolutely love how informal it is!

3:30 – 30 rock‘s alec baldwin looking quite gentlemen-like in his sleek bowtie. he mentioned he’s running for office? hmm… shall i say “spare us?!” stick with what ya know!

3:32 – ryan seacrest reveals that his “real name” is ryan seabrest

3:34 – this just in: hawaii 5-0‘s scott caan snores!

3:36 – donna karan-clad elisabeth moss chose a perfect color for her skintone – jeweled green.

3:37 – glee‘s diana agron looks radiant in j. mendel… but i absolutely HATE when people wear nude colors on the red carpet.

3:38  – WHOA, sorry ryan seacrest but your girl is looking not-so-great. julianna hough in a egyptian-inspired black & gold ensemble. bad choice.

3:4o – Golden Globe host ricky gervais on what he’s most looking forward to: “when it’s over, and i’m backstage having a beer.” HA!

3:43 – sarah hyland from modern family may be young, but her fashion choice is right on target!

3:44 - covert affair‘s piper perabo in oscar de la renta looks exceptional. dress is gorge, but hair and make-up is BREATHTAKING. the red lipstick keeps the black dress from being too boring.

3:46 – i love me some julie bowen! what a beautiful cut, but again i’m not a fan of the color. i wish this was red, orange or pink!

3:50 – never one to shy away from crazy fashion choices, helena bonham carter’s got a bee’s nest on her head and two different colored shoes on her feet.

3:54 – eva longoria steps out in BLACK zac posen. that seems to be the trend! gorgeous dress, though.

3:56 – pregnant nominee natalie portman looks stunning! love the pink & red, and especially that cute baby bump!

3:59 – breaking news… jimmy fallon & jason segal are “dating” as of this morning. got in an afternoon fight, but now everything’s better ;)

4:02 – i spy with my little eye january jones in brilliant red & emma stone in coral. LOVE IT.

4:09 – precious couple nicole kidman & keith urban up on the platform. sorry, nicole, but this dress is a huge MISS. keith on her rabbit hole role: “it’s important for nic to tell certain stories.” so cute.

4:14 – think i just saw my best dressed of the night: catherine zeta-jones in a stunning jewel-toned gown. wow! and hubby michael douglas reveals his tumor is gone! PRAISE GOD!

4:20 – modern family‘s sofia vergara gets it RIGHT in that beautiful red, hour-glass ensemble by vera wang!

4:26 – uh oh brad & angelina are here! angie in a versace green sparkle gown. pretty, but looks pretty old-fashioned. i think it’s funny that they always bypass E!.

4:27 – mila kunis in green too! WOW, love that color.

4:33 – another best dressed… temple grandin‘s claire danes! so pretty in pink and loving her jewelry.

4:36 – lea michele is always one of my faves, and tonight was no different. check her out!

4:40 – halle berry. oh my gosh. you are one of the most beautiful women in the world! why did you wear such an ugly dress?!?!

4:42 – ANNE HATHAWAY looking lovely lovely lovely in armani. very different, but i just love it.

4:43 – megan fox and her honey, both in armani. what an attractive couple! i actually like megan’s choice. pretty color!

4:45 – HATE jennifer lopez‘s dress. don’t even want to talk about it.

4:47 – another “hate”… for christina aguilera‘s hairstyle.

4:52 – the fighter‘s mark wahlberg so very much deserves awards for his movie. such a passion project!

5:00 – let the show begin! follow along here for coverage.

ricky gervais could be the new michael scott!

this would be brilliant!

on the heels of news that steve carell plans to bid adieu to the office, the guessing game as to how the show will survive who will replace him has begun. as a loyal office fan, i just can’t imagine it without him. it’s gonna be a bumpy road for show execs…

unless they recruit creator and star of the u.k. series, ricky gervais! apparently the idea has been thrown around, and both office execs and gervais aren’t (completely) ruling it out.

exec producer paul liberstein (and character “toby”) says:

“we talked about it today for a while. it’s not the leading idea… [but] it’s not a dead idea… there would be some things to deal with. on the flip side, you have someone who’s incredibly talented and who has played with a level of realism that’s the same as our show… if dunder mifflin needed to replace michael scott, they’d consider both internal and external candidates. and we will show them considering both. we’ll kind of start [the replacement process] and put it in motion. i don’t want steve to go, and if he decides he wants to stay, i will be very happy with that.”

always the joker, gervais himself says:

“as [my character in the office] david brent would say, ‘been there, done that, bought the t-shirt …’ as i would say, ‘why would i get up at 6 a.m. five days a week for seven years when i can hire someone else to do that and still get my syndication money?’”

is he trying to throw is off track? come on now, team, work together here! i cringe to think what the show will be without carell. ricky gervias might be the only cure-all!

thoughts?

to sum it up

the 3-hour presentation of the 67th annual golden globes came & went this past sunday night. and it was a pretty good night!

host ricky gervais was as awkward and wonderful as ever: “i recently just had a penis reduction. now i just have the one” (instead of two??) oh, ricky. to see the winners… well, at least the ones YOU care about… scroll down to the bottom for the full list!

and now, for some fashion.

the red carpet was all about the purple! which, of course, i thoroughly enjoyed. sandra bullock (in bottega venetta), leona lewis (in roberto cavalli), rose byrne (in lanvin), fergie (in elie saab) & jane krakowski (in j. mendel) all represented the color of royalty with beauty & grace.

*                *               *

on to the best & worst! jennifer aniston threw on this valentino gown, looking effortless and as gorgeous as ever. but it was truly the young hollywood crowd that took over my best picks. dianna agron, star of the tv show “glee” looked stunning in reem acra. perfect, perfect, perfect.

“avatar” star zoe saldana picked her louis vuitton dress no doubt for the color – the plum looks dazzling on her skin tone! actress camilla belle showed us exactly how to do the short dress in her giorgio armani piece… rarely do i like the short length for awards’ nights, but this is ravishing.

wrapping up my top 5 is another “glee” cast member – lea michele. her oscar de la renta gown was my absolute favorite of the evening. she’s got it down!

*                *                *

now brace yourself, it’s about to get bad. these ladies were pure disappointment. mariah carey brought some golden globes of her own, the poor gal. put those darn things away! and heidi klum – who we rarely see on the “worst dressed” list, is getting panned for her bizarre barbie-esque number.

90210 starlet annalynne mccord’s dress? she swung and missed with this grecian gown… it looks as if there’s a bit too much “cupping” going on up there. not flattering. funny lady tina fey chose a zac posen ensemble… with the ever-so-ugly calf-length flare.

christina aguilera walked the red carpet as a presenter with her “burlesque” co-star, cher. her peach versace gown had promise – until of course the metallic bodice took over. so close, christina!

*                 *                *

when lying is funny

ever seen ‘the office?’ it’s the brain child of actor/writer ricky gervais. which is why his latest movie ‘the invention of lying’ will probably be pretty darn funny! premiering september 25th, the movie takes place in an alternate reality in which lying does not exist. people speak the truth and nothing but the truth no matter what the consequences.

when ricky’s character, mark, suddenly develops the ability to lie, he goes from loserville to fame & fortune. enter a pretty lady, and things get messy! gervais co-wrote and directed the film along with matthew robinson. the funnyman took to his blog to forwarn critics to lay off his little project. “dear critics (everyone), when judging the film, please remember that it is a high concept, pg-13 romantic comedy. it’s not ‘schindler’s list’ or ‘the godfather.’”

hmm, already raising red flags? no need to worry though, everything from his record-setting podcasts to his hbo stand-up specials have turned into comedy gold. ‘invention of lying’ co-stars beauty jennifer garner & jonah hill, which should attract various demographics. bring it on! i’m excited to see this one.
