a thousand steps back

marveldivas

alright, i’m no crazy-feminist, but this is just WEIRD. marvel comics has released a picture and some limited info about their new superheros – the marvel divas.

divas?! DIVAS? i mean, come on. but it gets better. the superhero ladies are supposed to be cartoon crime-fighting versions of the characters from ‘sex and the city.’ yes, not only will we get to see the ladies in action, but we’ll hear about their boy problems. marvel’s roberto aguirre-sacasa says of the series, “there’s definitely that naughty element to it.” oh goodie.

and let’s point out the elephant in the room… nice bosoms, ladies. how very life-like?

well, we must have a sense of humor about it all. i’m sure they’ll be a hit among teenage boys at least. how long until they make a movie out of it?

watchmen: see it or skip it

watchmen

i went to see ‘watchmen’ this past weekend, and was excited to see what all the fuss was about. while i can’t say that i loved it, i can see why it has such a commercial appeal. it is action-packed, with a catchy storyline and interesting characters. one of the best and most surprising parts of the film was its soundtrack – a very unique combination of old & new songs.

i did have some pretty big critiques, though. i mean, i get it – almost every movie out there has to have some sort of romantic moment. but in this case, the whole dang movie was basically a sex scene! dr. manhattan – the big blue man – was completely naked with frequent full frontal views. this, coupled with some very graphic romps, were placed awkwardly throughout the rest of the movie.

the fact that it was 3 hours also did nothing to help its case. the story was at times hard to follow, as viewers were taken back & forth in time quite frequently. lots & lots of names to remember – who is wally weaver? jupiter? nite owl? various generations of superheros made for a semi-confusing ride.

on a scale of 1 to 10, i’d give it a 6.5. although i’m sure it will come in big at the box office, so who really cares?
