the fashion report: 2010 Academy Awards

ahhh, the red carpet. this year, i had so much to say that i even live-blogged it. i gotta a lot of opinions… apparently.

the ladies above had me over the moon in awe. kate beckinsale – i dunno, maybe it’s just her rockin’ bod – but she looked incredible in this kaufman franco gown. and playing up her curves big time was j.lo in this little number by giorgio armani prive.

another favorite was glee star lea michele in oscar de la renta. she got it right at the globes too! however, maybe it’s time to go for some color? she’s a fan of black.

penelope cruz chose the gorgeous red ensemble by donna karan. as far as i’m concerned, she can do no wrong. and wrapping out my fave top 5 is rachel mcadams… holy beautiful! she rocked this watercolor elie saab gown. pure perfection.

and now for the worst. i almost gagged looking at a few of these. sarah jessica parker leads the pack with this beyond fugly canary-yellow dress by chanel. what’s with the darn neck scarf? and i’m hating the shapelessness. nicole richie was arm candy to fiance joel madden, who DJ’ed the event. unforch, she got it oh-so-wrong in this elvira-esque reen acra dress. stripes at the oscars? i don’t think so.

and charlize. ohhhh charlize what the HECK were you thinking?? the lavender boob-cupping is not flattering. this is one time dior couture was not a good look for her. definitely my “worst dressed” for the evening! now, diane kruger wasn’t quite so bad. i actually would’ve liked her chanel choice had it not been interrupted mid-way by those ruffles. close, but no cigar.

zoe saldana’s gown had the makings of a gorgeous dress… great fit, inventive, sparkly and purple. until the camera panned down to the bottom. what the balls? (literally) this givenchy gown was stirrin’ up quite the controversy. she looks like a paper mache project! and my favorite, as one reporter put it, “how do you say UGLY in na’vi?”

and for good measure, i threw in two gentlemen that got it right. first we have my celeb crush ryan reynolds in a classic tom ford tux. you can never go wrong with a good-fitting suit! i have to hand it to robert downey jr. for being inventive here. while i don’t love the blue sunglasses, i am a hug fan of the blue bow tie. his lanvin tuxedo even coordinated well with his wife’s! now, that’s cute.

alright, so what are you thinkin’? agree or disagree on my best/worsts?

spokesperson for the skinny?

no shock here… thinner-than-thin celeb victoria beckham is adding her two cents about the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA)’s new “health is beauty” campaign. the campaign encourages stylists, designers and others in the fashion industry to work with healthier-sized models.

while guest hosting on ‘the view,’ victoria says of the issue “most of these girls are naturally thin and i don’t think we should be discriminating against someone because they are too thin or too curvy or too large or whatever it is.” point well-taken, but how in the world can designers tell which ones are “naturally thin” and which are starving themselves every day?

take this girl for example… model coco rocha was told to lose weight at a size 6! a former vogue cover model, rocha lost out on catwalk work because of her refusal to drop sizes. why risk her health? and hear this: model luisel ramos stuck to a menu of green leaves and diet coke for 3 months before runway season… and suffered a fatal heart attack as a result. nobody learned. just six months later, her own sister passed away of malnutrition! so sad. victoria, watch what you say next time. this is too serious to make assumptions.

on the prowl

it’s never-ending with these two! just over a month ago, jon and kate gosselin of ‘jon & kate plus 8′ announced that they would be divorcing. the family’s tumultuous life apparently hit one too many bumps. amidst accusations of cheating and tense video shoots for their hit tlc show, the announcement came as no surprise.

but whoa! life goes on. just today in fact jon gosselin was spotted with a new girlfriend in st. tropez. because that’s EXACTLY what he should be doing with 8 children under the age of 10 at home. perhaps it was jon’s match.com commercial that brought them together?

will ferrell’s brain child ‘funny or die’ featured a mock video of jon, hoping to find love on the popular match.com dating website. drawing attention to his ed hardy t-shirt obsession & ridiculous-looking pierced ears, the actor made a pretty funny jon gosselin. and, low and behold, a few days later his ex-bride came out with her own ad! you gotta check them both out below. interested? log onto to match.com today!

how NOT to

perhaps OK magazine should re-think what it means to ‘pay tribute.’ their latest edition, slated to hit newsstands thursday of this week, features an incredibly offensive last pic of michael jackson. (if you really wanna see it, click here) the magazine reportedly spent close to $500,000 to obtain their cover pic of the legendary mj on a stretcher being carried out by paramedics. what kind of tribute is that?

next to the close-up of jackson’s lifeless face are the words ”in loving memory.” i think it goes without saying that cataloging the chaotic and tragic last moments of someone’s unexpected death is hardly a “loving memory.”

peoplecovermj

OK!’s editorial director sarah ivens defended the cover: “it’s a photo that captures the surprise and the upset and the moment of this breaking news story . . . i hope the cover will provoke readers. it celebrated the man, but it also does expose that he was an eccentric character who lived a very controversial life.”

so far, the reaction has been 100% negative. people are obviously outraged. a petition has even been started to stop the presses on the issue. what’s weird is that ok mag owner richard desmond purchased the pic as an attempt to bolster sales. i think this move has done exactly the opposite, and will receive more and more criticism as the hours pass. in the meantime, enjoy a classy tribute cover of mj, by people magazine.

saved by zack morris

nostalgia, its feels so good. mark-paul gosselaar was set to appear on late night with jimmy fallon this past tuesday night, and we instead were treated to a little surprise. gosselaar reprised his most famous character, zack morris from ‘saved by the bell.’ and it was glooorious. i never realized how much i missed the days of kelly kapowski & slater, bayside high & the max.

the vid above features the 9-minute interview with the famed beach-blonde teenager. complete with the oversized cell phone & freeze-frames, it felt just like before. but gosselaar’s moved on to drama these days - there to ultimately promote the new season of TNT’s ‘raising the bar,’ in which he plays a high-powered lawyer. click here to see video & air dates of the hit show.
